11th ABN Div Arctic Ex in Alaska with some CAF.

Bossman wants a lot more like it.

Note this link in the article to a RAND report on US Forces Arctic Capabilities. - worthwhile read.

Years ago when one of our OCs was the ARCG commander I sent him an email and used history to back it.

The Long Range Desert group. This sort of thing is not dissimilar - a vast area and small teams of soldiers striking deep.

Like the sand desert snow covered terrain provides extra challenges for defenders as the ability to travel quickly by ski/oversnow vehicles, just about anywhere, vastly increases the area you need to watch.

In Norway we regularly skied full battalions through mountain ranges, in excess of 40 kms in under 24 hours, to appear unchallenged in the rear echelons of OPFOR formations. Long periods of winter darkness, about 16 hours, helped alot too of course.

One thing we all need to realize is that those where where days pre digital battlefield and the enablers for detection that exist today.

Maybe we should study The Battle of Hoth.....kidding.

Agreed on your point. UAVs, Thermal Imagery etc all will play a part and we need to find out how to minimize the signatures.
