US Presidential Election 2024 - Trump vs Harris - Vote Hard with a Vengence

So this is actually a good thing. I suspect he may find resistance across party lines though to this idea…
With gerrymandering of districts and the power of incumbency, there is almost no churn in the US Congress, hence the rot and stagnation in that place.

It was only a couple of years ago that I learned Representatives have to go to election every two years. It’s amazing they have time to do anything other than fund raise and campaign.

On average do most US citizens support the US dumping tax dollars into Ukraine?

The internets say the US has sent more than $64.1 billion so far.

Those billions are being “dumped” in the USA. It’s going to new kit for the US military to replace the old stuff being set to Ukraine.
It still tax dollars being used.

The US sends Ukraine 300 Bradley IFVs. The government then uses tax dollars to replace those Bradley's.

That assumes that pork barreling wouldn't have bought that equipment regardless of actual need. I recall a number of news articles over the past decade of uniformed leadership in the US saying "no thanks" to additional equipment, but that equipment gets bought regardless because the factory that makes them is in a specific political riding.

It’s kit that’s being replaced anyway. Unlike in Canada, there is a lot of churn in American arsenals as they’re constantly buying and replacing stuff. They don’t do the 40 year procurement process like we do. All those Bradleys would just be sitting in the desert somewhere.

So 10% tarif on Canadian goods going into the US? What result are you expecting? I see retaliatory measures and a hike in inflation.

We? As in the US?

I’m not sure what any of that means. What do you mean by “blended system”? And how would they be beneficial?

They did a pretty good job last time. But despite your hope, tariffs will likely hit us well before an election here and well before a renegocaition of the USMCA. My guess is that tarifs will be a tool they (the US) will use to try and put us in a corner. I don’t see that as good for us.

Why? What does PP bring to the table that gets us the exemptions? Is he going to give up supply management? He’s been pretty steadfast in his support of that. Will he increase defence spending? Not sure he actually will.

The big question is can he put together the same type of bi partisan team that the LPC did last time? If he can, I might be inclined to agree that the fact that he isn’t Trudeau might give him a bit of a better position but really it’s who he names to head the whole thing. What minister does he have that can open doors the way Freeland was able to? I am sure though that some players from last time like Rona Ambrose will be involved. And…it’s no secret that Global Affairs is going to get the hammer brought down on them when the CPC takes over. If they cut like they did during DRAP without any real thought because it’s low hanging fruit you could lose a lot of corporate knowledge from the last time going into négociations.
After doing some reading last night, I've decided I'm not sufficiently knowledgeable of the subject to hold a position and argue it. I'll attempt in the coming weeks to familiarize myself further on the subject. I understand the basics, but not the nuances. I'll leave that others for now. :salute:

Nobody is stopping you from discussing, but you need to find someone else to humour your speculation. There’s no shortage of like minded posters to agree with you.

As strange as it may sound, I don’t purposely post here to antagonize you. But if you reply, I have, and will, reply in kind.

I frankly don’t care if you humour my speculation or not.

Mods: Since the election is done, can we just close this thread and move any further discussion to the Trump Admin 2024-2028 thread?

It'll close after inauguration so the actual Trump Admin stuff can stay as separate as possible from the election post mortem.

noted - makes sense. Thanks!

Speaking of the election post-mortem, Ipsos had a questionnaire in mid-Oct 2024 of people answering questions about US election issues and public opinion. The first line says (correctly) “We live in two Americas”.

The last chart in the article is particularly interesting - the pic below is from the same article with the headline taken from elsewhere.

How can a convicted felon become President of the United States? How could decent people vote for him?

Andrew Cuomo
stated on July 18, 2017 in an article on LinkedIn:
"70 million Americans have a criminal record — that’s one in three adults."

....

I may have said this before. In my time in the US I worked in the fishing industry. I worked on factory trawlers and in small fishing towns. I trained people in the processing plants how to use the lines I designed and installed. The people I trained were Mexicans, Brazilians and Guatemalans. I trained Japanese and Norwegians. And I trained Americans: black, white and brown. And I trained, and worked alongside, lots of folks with tattoos and patches, inked teardrops and cobwebs with pins. I worked alongside trades people that couldn't cross state lines because of felony convictions.

And I never felt unsafe in any of those plants. I also never observed any discrimination on any grounds whatsoever. I did observe criminality, usually related to gangs from points of origin of the foreign workers - exploited over telephone cards and the occasional knife fight between Guatemalans and Filipinos for example.

But by and large, my sense of those small town factories in both red and blue states, is that those folks on the lines felt they had an awful lot more in common with each other. I never saw a disturbance based on race, gender, or any kind of sexuality. Everyone was too busy counting their change and hoping that there was enough fish to keep the lines open for another week or two.

And Trump was really popular.

...

When you have a society that results in as many felons, prison graduates, as you have college graduates, you shouldn't be surprised when the felons vote for one of their own.

And if one third of society has been convicted, how many have been prosecuted? Have been investigated? Have friends and families that have been investigated, prosecuted, convicted, incarcerated?

Where is the stigma? The shame that is supposed to act as a deterrent?

Some interestingly framed questions there.

Border crossings over the last few months. How about the last four years?
Stock market high? The market is priced in dollars.
Inflation declined over the last year? The price of goods today vs four years ago (including the price of Stocks).
Violent crimes down? How about non-violent crimes and reporting rates?

It is not misinformation. It is the application of information and what is important to the user.
