Strictly based on TI - only - , for our history buffs,

Of our 23 prime ministers,

1) William Lyon Mackenzie King

2) Sir John A. McDonald

3) Pierre Trudeau

4) Sir Wilfred Laurier

5 and 6 ) Jean Chretien ( 1993 - 2003 ) and Justin Trudeau ( 2015 - 2025 , should he remain in office until then )

So one hated by the right, one hated by the left, one marred by a massive scandal, one who scandals like he breathes, which leaves King and Laurier.

King certainly had issues. Nothing comes to mind about Laurier.
Only thing which really comes to mind about Laurier is he was pretty racist and pushed some pretty racist policies, Chinese head tax, tried to exclude black people from coming to Canada, etc.

Sir John A was a much more egalitarian leader even by todays standards, his name only really gets marred by the Residential Schools, which when started was very different than what they would eventually evolve to.

Yes SJAM's government instituted the Residential School System, but successive governments both Liberal and Conservative continued that policy for generations.

Including PET and Chretien as his Minister of Indian Affairs.
And of course when PMPET repatriated the Constitution and could have revised the Canadian Indian Act to be more considerate of Canada’s First Nations, but chose note to…I suppose on the plus side of PET’s conduct with First Nations as PM, at least he didn’t bugger off to go surfing on the inaugural celebration of Truth and Reconciliation Day…

Apples and Trees...

PET fucked off a lot of things for his own vanity.

They were a great idea when Ryerson envisioned them for Ontario and Ontario was encouraged by the local band elders to build them. There were no school buses back then and getting the pupil to the school often required several days or longer. We have re-written the history to suit the woke fantasy and will be paying for those lies for generations I suspect

He could have also abolished the treaties and created a truly equal society for all citizens. But such is life.

Having boarding schools wasn't the problem. Some of the people running them was one problem. The policies designed to suppress culture and language were another problem.
Also in the great Canadian tradition, underfund them so they can't do the job they were supposed to and then have laws/regulations that defeat the purpose of the schools anyways (Indian Act preventing them from moving, working, etc)

FWIW, Canada has a long history of such policies, mainly designed to integrate millions of immigrants faster into the economy.

It's a fascinating part of Canadian history, I've found.

I doubt that would have gone over well with the FNs. Complain as they might about the Indian Act, those that advocate for change want it replaced, not abolished. To simply abolish it is akin to saying 'you lost, suck it up'.
