LPC leadership race - 2025

The CPC needs to be cautious - their actions when forming the GoC and putting in place preferential treatment for companies from China suggest they are also fully compromised.
Any party that wants to participate in Canada’s Parliament has to be not only cautious but put Canada’s interests ahead of party and personal gain. All should be held accountable for proper conduct.

The next connection had Christy announced she only joined the Conservatives to support Jean Charest.

Meanwhile, the CPC chose Poilievre.

Ok, question to the constitutional wonks out there.

If Carney wins the Running of the Snakes Derby, he’s not an MP, so how’s he become PM?

Seems a byelection in a riding where someone leaves to spend more time with their family would take a loooooong time given the need for someone to be able to plug and play.

???

There’s nothing that actually obligates the PM to be a sitting MP. Conventionally they will run in a by election for a safe seat. John Turner is a recent example. Mackenzie King actually lost his seat twice yet kept his position as PM because his party formed government, and he parachuted back in in by elections.

So the prospect of a PM with a seat in the gallery isn’t unprecedented.

I was also thinking that in the past, Senators have been pulled into Cabinet. Could that be done to “pull in” a PM? I can imagine the screaming (rightly so) about non-democratic shortcuts, but is that another way in?

there's no real reason to do anything IMO when theres almost certainly going to be an election by the end of October and maybe earlier if there is a failed confidence vote

Good move. Any leadership hopeful should have this as part of their plan.
Not only is it a good move, but would take the wind out of the CPCs sails. The consumer carbon tax has been 80% of their messaging, taking that away will leave a void on their argument.

From a political strategy move it would. So much about carbon tax election, axe the tax etc would be minimized from the equation.

If we end up in a protracted tariff war with the US it will be more about that than a non existant carbon tax. It will also put PP in a position to try and show he can be captain Canada and as we’ve seen that seems to irk some Albertans and western separatists. Delicate balancing act required on his part. Right now he seems to be very quiet about all of it. “I’m not the PM” is only going to go so far.

Promising to reverse something you've championed and increased over the last decade is a long stretch. Anyone associated to the current government needs to be summarily dismissed and forgotten about as potential future leaders.

On brand for Liberals, flip flopping positions based on polling: Shes been a full supporter of a carbon tax for 9 years.

Which is funny, because its flip flopping, pandering and populism when a Conservative changes gears.

But oh the sweet irony of this. Again its exciting time to be a Liberal again! I think I'm voting Freeland.

Or Tracy Wilson if she runs.

Liberal partisans still believe they're owed perpetual government and nothing they did with Trudeau running the show was wrong. To see them cower away from their hallmark policies of the last decade is hilarious.
