High school students flunk O Canada

No, I feel it is very important that they play the National Anthem with the lyrics, whether English or French or comboned (I leaen towards the combined version to keep with bilingualism)
At Scouts, every week, we sing the O'Canada as part of our Opening flag ceremony and they are at Alert at the Closing loweing and folding of the flag...and heavens help the individual teen who goofs off and talks or is just plain disrespectful. My next little lsurprise is the sing the Loyal (Royal) Anthem. Myself and another leader are originally British and are irked at the fact that few youth (and adults) know the Loyal (Royal) Anthem. I firmly believe that it should be sung because it is part of our (Canadian)Heritage.
I will be reviewing the lyrics to The Maple Leaf Forever to attempt to fatham the polical insensitivity of it. The PC era has lead us away from our core values of Patriotism, Nationalism and just plain being respectful.
I'm okay with losing the lord's prayer because of religious diversity. WHAT I do get upset with is the fact that some religions push and pose thier beliefs of the masses.

I think the excuse of some people being transplants and not knowing the anthem is a little funny - if they've passed their citizenship test, they know the anthem...perhpas we should employ something like a basic citizenship review before issuing a passport. I'm sure people would start taking being Canadian a little more seriously then.

If you're going to add a second song that most people nowadays don't know, why not "God Save The Queen?"

When I came to Canada, it was in Toronto that I spent the first year. I went to an English school and had to sing the O Canada along with everyone else in the class. I did not know a word of English and still I learned it. I was not born here and I didn't grow up here but it was just normal that I "follow the flow".
1 year later, I left Canada and came back after 2 years... to live in Quebec. When I got to the french school in West Island, there was no more O Canada (wether in french of English) sung in the morning. And I remember, being 16 years old and thinking: That's too bad! I used to like to start the day this way... and 23 years later, I can say that it did give me a sense of belonging here.

I threw "The Maple Leaf Forever" out there simply because the lyrics are apparently being changed or have been to reflect that certain parts of this country don't believe Gen Wolfe to be a dauntless hero (read - the ones that lost) - as the English version of our National Anthem (BTW, "TMLF" was in the running for that honour) has been changed oh so many times for political correctness whereas the French version oddly enough hasn't. Not Quebec bashing, BTW just PC bashing.

Mate, their own environment, as in their home, and what they learn there from their parents and siblings. I don't know what else you thought I was saying. Kids spend most of his/her time in his home environment, and by the time they are around 5 yrs old, they have well developed their personalities.
Sadly, many parents are not the best mentors.

Of the countries I've seen that embody said belief, all first world nations....
Countries that Integrate Religion and Govt.... Not quite so successful...
But those are my 2 Dollars.... That we in a Free and Democratic society have the choice to believe in what ever God we choose to (or not to)
Which is why that separation should be maintained. Everybody is free to do what they want at home.
Chevy57: Absolutely right children are a product of what we teach them...as parents. I cannot fathom why the Church SHOULD have something to do in there. I am not religious, never have been never will be, much like an INCREASING percentage of serving members, and that is a non-reversible trend in western society. I will not read the good book, and I am still a good person and a caring partner/father. Sorry I fail to see the link b/w goodness and the Book... and this has NOTHING to do with political leanings.

I was raised RC for 20 years and chose to not continue to follow those teachings as they did not mesh with my beliefs of treating all people equally... I have Issues with the Church and their Motives.
However, if someone wishes to follow those teaches I respect that, provided they afford me the same respect in my choice to not follow it.
Religion and Spirituality are Personal choices, and must be left up to the individual to make on their own.
But on the Original Topic....
For Crying out loud..... why cant we make it a law to play the damned Anthem!??!?!? Seriously??! what the heck are they teaching kids these days?

Weird, at the school my kids go to, the kids sing O Canada every morning before they start classes; there's also an optional prayer group in the morning for students who's families want them to take part in it. It's a little different than when I was in school, but I went through the Catholic School system in Alberta, so it's not like having morning and afternoon prayers would be any surprise, and of course we sang the anthem daily too.
