Canadian Forces Senior Appointment to Chief of Reserves and Cadets
DND statement, 20 May 08

OTTAWA, ON – Major-General Dennis Tabbernor’s appointment to Chief of Reserves and Cadets (C Res & Cdts) was confirmed by the Chief of Defence Staff, General Rick Hillier at a Change of Appointment ceremony held at National Defence Headquarters at 11:00 a.m today. MGen Tabbernor replaces MGen Herb Petras who served as C Res & Cdts from December 2004 until his retirement in January 2008, after forty-five (45) years of service.

MGen Tabbernor started his military career as a reservist with The Royal Winnipeg Rifles in September 1967. He spent five (5) years with his regiment and, in 1972 he transferred to the Regular Force were he spent the next twenty-one (21) years. In June 1993, MGen Tabbernor transferred back to the Reserve Force returning to Winnipeg where he assumed command of his former Regiment the following year. In April 2007, he was assigned to Combined Security Transition Command Afghanistan as Deputy Commanding General – Afghan National Army Development. He was promoted to his current rank in April 2008 and is today appointed Chief – Reserves and Cadets.

As C Res & Cdts, MGen Tabbernor will be responsible for monitoring all matters of pan-reserve interest and will, through consultation and advice, strive to ensure that the capabilities and characteristics of the Reserve – Primary Reserves, Cadet Instructors Cadre and the Canadian Rangers - are properly integrated into the formulation and implementation of Canadian Forces policies and programs. MGen Tabbernor will also be responsible for the coordination of departmental support to the Cadet and the Junior Canadian Rangers youth programs, as well as programs aimed at increasing employer support for the Reserves.

MGen Tabbernor was also the CO of the LSSR in Thunder Bay as a Reg F LCol. Subsequently held staff position in Manitoba Lakehead District HQ, then DComd and Comd. Stood up 38 CBG as first Comd. Was DComd of LFWA, then to LS in Ottawa.
