Battles leave Afghans nowhere to turn

The problem with comparing the British Imperial and Soviet experience in Afghanistan with our own is that both empires sought to impose foreign rule on the (notably fractious) Afghans, and we are doing the opposite.

That is not entirely true.  We are attempting to impose a Western Style democracy on a people who have never known such a thing.  Although not necessairly a bad thing, some Afghans may see this in the same light they did the Soviet occupation
