2024 BC Election

Rustad also came out and said that he accepts the results. Now he has to focus on becoming an effective opposition.
I saw that. It was a clear and classy concession, and set an appropriate tone reinforcing the legitimacy of the electoral result. Unsurprisingly, there were a lot of smooth-brained takes when he posted it to Twitter. Like, Koala-brain smooth. There are a bunch of Canadians clearly eating up the nonsense that if their side loses, or if the closeness of the election delays projections until very last counts are done, it must have been fraud. It’s an ugly and destabilizing mentality.

BC getting a weird once you leave the major cities. Lots of “mountain folk” who watched Deliverance as a guide to how one should handle trespassers.

The worst ones are the city folk who watched too many episodes of “Duck Dynasty” or other red-neck reality shows and then move to the mountains to emulate them…

"Lots". I wonder how many of those "BC mountain folks" there are. 250? 500? Pity there are no ordinary folk in the interior to offset the good old boys.

Having lived at the coast for over 40 years, including lots of visits to relatives on the Island, I sure enjoy the complete absence of weird folks.

I guess we wait until after election day to learn about Eby's CCP advisor, or is Rebel News making it up?

I used to have to go to remote areas by myself as a government agent. A lot of it was how to present yourself to them. But there are people who you don't visit without two armed police officers in attendance. Generally I would scope out what group people fell into before going, by checking with the local enforcement officers whether municipal, provincial or Federal.

Is that recent or years ago? Just curious..

Bit of an update. Final votes were counted and tabulated this weekend including judicial recounts. No changes.

So with 47 elected MLA, Eby must appoint 1 to Speaker of the House. Out of the remaining 46, he’s appointed a total of 42 cabinet ministers and parliamentary secretaries, rivalling only NDHQ in GOFO leadership appointments.

And pray tell let’s see a list of the portfolios they oversee.

Well, that didn't take long...

Shovel that pork :)

Rob Shaw: Opposition blasts premier’s decision to give every NDP MLA extra titles and pay

Premier David Eby’s decision to give every MLA in his BC NDP caucus an extra title and pay boost isn’t sitting well with the opposition, which says it’s a waste of more than $2 million.

Conservative leader John Rustad said the premier’s decision to blow money on frivolous appointments for his MLAs is unacceptable at a time when ordinary British Columbians are dealing with cost of living pressures.

“People in British Columbia are struggling to put food on the table, they are struggling to make ends meet and you have a reaction to David Eby basically giving every one of his MLAs some sort of wage increase with a bloated government, as opposed to a government that needs to reign in its spending and focus on dealing and supporting people who are really struggling in British Columbia,” said Rustad.

BC MLAs make a base salary of almost $120,000. Eby named 27 members to his cabinet, which comes with a $60,000 raise for full ministers and $42,000 for ministers of state. He also named 14 parliamentary secretaries, who get $18,000 pay bumps. The few members of his 47-person caucus left without a job were given caucus executive roles, such as government whip, caucus chair and deputy chair of the committee of the whole — each worth $24,000 in additional salary.
