I have a good amount of free time until I'm in. Is it worth learning French on my own, or will I be taught once I've joined?

Yes, start French as soon as you can. Being proficient in both offical languages will be beneficial to your career and personal life in the CAF.

I've had a few times when I've ended up working with French-speaking people who couldn't speak English.

As you progress through your career your going to find French language ability becomes more and more important. You're also going to find it's importance is not matched by the institutions ability to provide that training in an ongoing way.

It quickly becomes the members responsibility to obtain and maintain that language skill.

So no yes start now, and don't stop. Ever.

The two most useful things before you start course is French and fitness. It's really hard to get full time French courses once you're in (this is where the RMC advantage really comes in). And your Chain of Command and the Language School might not even accept you for language training unless you show some prior aptitude and motivation. You'll also have so much other Professional Development you have to do.

If you've got months, I would say do all you can to learn as much French as you can. Workbooks. Online tutors. Or even just classes in night school or Alliance Française.
