US Presidential Election 2024 - Trump vs Harris - Vote Hard with a Vengence

Not being too macho to seek help certainly could be a reason liberal men, women, and teenagers show considerably higher instances of mental health and report being unhappy in their lives.
I know I am significantly more happy when I am doing "macho" things like lifting heavy weights or challenging myself physically & mentally. It's the best therapy there is.

Doing "macho" things doesn't have to be toxic.

My point being that conservative men, women, and teenagers may have a stigma against reporting that they are unhappy or that they have any instances of poor mental health.

Or, (since we're just making things up) Liberal men and women use mental health "issues" as a crutch and excuse for bad behaviour and failure to regulate their actions.

Being emotional is not an excuse for failing to regulate how you act.
Sure, it can be a crutch in some cases, but in some cases it actually may be a mental health issue. If someone says they may have a mental health issue, that’s not necessarily the same as blaming everything on that issue.

Again, with the whole discussion in the CAF surrounding mental health in the past decade or two, I would have thought that de-stigmatizing it would be a no-brainer.

Would some people use it as a crutch? Sure. But what is worse - having some more people say they are having issues, or a culture where no one says they’re having issues?

Absolutely. What I meant by “macho” is more attitude, such as never showing emotion or any sign of “emotional weakness”, rather than actions.

Agree with you 100%.

Trying to conflate being strong/doing macho things with being toxic and abusive is a narrative that the left happily pushes.

As I mentioned earlier, I’m referring to the attitudes rather than working out or whatever.

There are left wing people with guns in the US - some of my family included. They’ve had those guns for decades - I first saw them when I was a kid visiting them.

They will tell you that they go to the range, etc regularly but doing that isn’t part of their identity.

Its also possible Liberal men, women, and teenagers have even higher percentages of mental health issues than shown but they don't report it due to the stigma of appearing weak.

I don’t disagree that it’s possible, but it’s hard to have an apples to apples comparison when one side has a higher stigma against reporting it.

So, using random numbers, saying “80% of liberals report mental heal issues” when 70% will report it and “30% of conservatives report mental health issues” when 20% report it doesn’t mean definitively that liberals have higher levels of mental health issues. It could be that out of the 80% of conservatives not reporting, 80% have issues but we can never know that if they don’t report.

Based off my medical expertise doing St Johns Standard First I say it comes down to internalizing a bunch of external economic domestic social and foreign problems.

Making sure I’m understanding you correctly, you’re saying the above are reasons for non-reporting by conservative-leaning folks?

If so, “internalizing” is the key word, and I don’t think it’s limited to left/right politics. You can be left-leaning and internalize cultural issues - just ask a selection of Asian folks.

Anyways I think we tangented this long enough. Back on topic…?

Making sure I’m understanding you correctly
My take on the higher reported levels of mental health issues and overall unhappiness in Liberals compared to Conservatives is due to the former internalizing a whole bunch of real and perceived (external) problems in the world rather than the latter not reporting as much due to it not being considered macho.

Now we can get back to discussing key issues, like MAGA dating.

The reactions to elections and changes of policy are a useful if rough yardstick for peoples' emotional health and resiliency.

There is no reason emotional health is not like physical health. The more capable you try to be, the more capable you are.

Perhaps some women are a little concerned about showing emotion in public for fear of becoming a maga meme?

Noting of course that significant numbers of women have the same relationship with picking things up and putting them down.

A massive chunk of the older, traditionally male constellation of values and attributes are universally positive, when paired with a healthy dose of emotional intelligence and openness (consider the pagan Norse for an old-school example).

What some people call "Toxic Masculinity" is what I refer to as "Stoicism".

It's the Western Man's form of Zen.

I kind of think I was there at the beginning. The world into which I was inducted was very buttoned up, stiff collared, starchy, self-contained. Stiff upper lip was taught.

By the time I was seven or so the revolution was in full swing. Let it all hang out. Displaying emotions was a badge of pride. It was anti-establishment behaviour.

The left saw the right as being inauthentic. The right saw the left as undisciplined show offs.

Compared to the folks on 6 Jan 2021 who seemed to take losing extremely well.
Which ones? The embedded FBI agitators or the ANTIFA goons wearing brand new Trump paraphernalia. Or perhaps the Capital police tour guides? I'm not saying there weren't conservatives involved, but let's be fair. There's plenty of footage, the scam Jan 6 Committee farce, etc. The whole thing was a black mark on US history but let's not be naive and think this was all planned and executed exclusively by the right.
