I agree in its current form. I was harkening back to a long time ago… the crown only let it exist to provide advice (and again, an oversimplification; the relationship between the house “of the people” and British Royalty has always been… complex).Baz, I would quibble with one aspect of your post. The only person who gives advice to the Crown is the Prime Minister. The leader of his majesty’s loyal opposition only has two jobs- to oppose and to be prepared to form government. How they go about it is their business. I would prefer a more sober opposition, but we are in performative times.
However, what I was trying to say, somewhat clumsily, is the role of the opposition is not to simply oppose (Question Period notwithstanding, it has always been theatrical). It’s to meaningfully engage, especially in committee, to make the government do what’s best for the country (to the extent party politics allows). PP’s approach, and Trudeau’s response to it, seem overly childish and not helpful in the long run.
I know there are a lot of people who applaud when someone “tells it like it is,” even if that’s just hurling insults and slanders. Forgive me if I don’t happily jump on to that particular band wagon.
