Trump administration 2024-2028

They’re going to struggle to establish that municipalities or states have an obligation to expend any of their resources supporting the enforcement of federal law. This is another case with division of powers issues at play. This is political more than it is legal.

Will probably be very easy to show they undermined it.

Potentially. Whether or not anything was done unlawfully will depend on what actual obligations are imposed on states or municipalities by law as a minimum legally enforceable standard. Some municipalities may voluntarily provide greater voluntary cooperation than others, and where a municipalities reduces or eliminates its voluntary cooperation over and above what the law demands, that could be called ‘undermining’- but not necessarily a breach of any law.

The U.S. has plenty of history of different jurisdictional levels fighting over who can or must do what. Nothing new there. The feds may allow municipal or state police or other agencies to assist with immigration enforcement. Whether they can require them to is another matter.

There is no '4 more yrs' for Trump, < snip >

Perhaps not. He refuses to release his medical report, leaving us to rely on the betting pools.

He is currently ranked after Buzz Aldrin and before Jim Bakker.

Assuming he lives until 2029, when he leaves office, he could once again face the prospect of criminal prosecution and possible jail time, further motivating him to stay in power.

If the 2028 GOP ticket is Vance - Trump, President Vance could then resign, making Trump president again.

Or, President JD could invoke the 25th Amendment ( that he is unable to discharge the duties of president. )

He would not need to give any reason or proof of this incapacity.

Possible?

It's the inhumanity aspect of it. We don't know the stories of these people. We don't know if they're actual criminals beyond border jumping. What we know is that these colombians were sent home on a military aircraft in chains, to which their president objected as it's completely against most global norms for these types of things.
You're right we don't know their stories or background. The Trump info machine is putting out the people being deported are hardened criminals who pose a threat to the security of the US. The couple pictures I've seen of people deported so far they looked like grandmas and young women. Obviously there's more pictures out there, just these I've seen didn't strike me as the national security types.

Maybe military flights, which are apparently being sent every day, are cheaper on resources, easier to coordinate, and offer military pilots flying hours.
Or maybe Trump wants to posture using military flights vs civilian to show he means business or something.

I see you too like to drink peyote and gaze into the crystal ball.

The lowest-hanging fruit of increasing or decreasing illegal immigrant flows is making symbolic gestures that influence their perception of how easy it will be to enter and remain in the US. Biden made one gesture with his initial EOs and policies; Trump is making a different one. Either situation presents lots of injustices.

Economists tend to favour consumption taxes over income taxes. Import tariffs alone are too selective and too variable (tend to decrease the volume of what is taxed).

But an import taroff is a consumption tax.

All consumption taxes act as brakes on consumption. In the case of alcohol and tobacco that is a feature not a bug. Same with gas and carbon.

Even cases where the government wants consumption to continue to generate revenues are subject to the effect of increasing prices on demand. People are constantly looking for the Least Cost Formulation to maximize profits.

If there is competition tariffs will be high. If the material is critical and lacks competition then tariffs will be low.

Trade without tariffs is a recent experiment not universally adopted.

ICE was starting to post details of individuals taken into custody but that stopped with the social media gag through Executive Order.

Yes. The point is that all the people who side with favouring consumption taxes over income taxes (efficiency) should consider adopting import tariffs as a starting point and press for extending the taxes to all goods and services and cancelling income taxes.

If all purchases are (value-added-)taxed then the "brake" - the bias on peoples' decisions - essentially ceases to matter. Remove opportunities for arbitrage.

Just to be clear I am not favouring one approach over another. I don't like any taxes. I don't like paying for groceries either. I am a big fan of free stuff. Unfortunately I have learned to accept paying for stuff.

My point is that I don't think that change, no matter how drastic, is a terminal illness. Eventually every system adjusts and finds a new normal. One comment I heard was worst case scenario of a universal 25% tariff would be equivalent to a 2 to 3% recession. So, some pain, not as bad as a depression and probably not as bad as Covid.

I'd be happy to see the "floor" for income taxes raised to whatever amounts to "upper middle class." Leaving the rich-through-unbelievably-wealthy untapped seems wasteful.

Tariffs applied on some sort of country-nonspecific scheme could make sense: perhaps a % for overseas, b % for neighbours, and some sort of sliding labour cost leveller linked to the national minimum wage.

Now this might very well be a small nuc that Trump just dropped. String enough of these together and there very well could be an uprising in the US within the next 4yrs - in which case Trump declares martial law and continues to govern past 2028. There, I'm done looking into the crystal ball and drinking my peyote for the next few months.

This one kinda flew under our radar here but appears to be a Big Deal. A federal judge has just temporarily blocked this pending further emergency litigation. Expect this one to be fast and furious through court.

Meals on Wheels for Seniors was caught in the same EO as condoms for Gaza. Not a lot of thought in this one by Team Trump.

In a further move to cement the enshittification of government, Trump’s offering nearly the entire federal public service a 7 months’ salary buyout as a RIF. Gonna be a lot of workers with the best prospects leaving the feds behind.
