Trudeau Popularity - or not. Nanos research

Polls are designed to confirm the purchasers biases. Who would keep dropping huge amounts of money on a firm that consistently gave them bad news? They are a distraction. Making decisions based on poll percentages is a mugs game.

Especially because using the data, I could have written an article entitled “Almost twice as many Canadians view Poilièvre very favourably as they do Trudeau.”

1.72 is almost 2 so that would be a statistically acceptable by-line.

Polls are snapshots in time not predictors.

If you think that political parties including the CPC are not watching and analyzing polls you are dreaming.

Nah, I wanna see the champagne socialists put their money where their mouth is.

I lost all my guns in a boating accident anyways. Be damned if I could remember the name of that lake ;)
Dude, I said not to mention the guns at all!
Besides if they find out about our cache of liberal scaring guns, we are done for.

I like A 100K bar. If your household is taking in that or more you can afford child care.
Huh. Human brain is funny. I tend to vote blue, but when it comes to tax I'm more of a Scandic model socialist. Completely ok with a higher marginal tax rate, no desire to lower it, and would be fine with it higher if I was convinced that money was going to good use. Wasn't bothered by earning out of my Trillium Benefit, HST Credit, etc.

That being said, my brain immediately shouted "THAT'S NOT FAIR" at paying twice as much for daycare. Something about it being a point of sale reduction maybe?

Means-testing, sure. I'd choose a ceiling somewhere under the median income, lest it be ridiculously high. But the burden of raising children didn't just wink into existence a few years ago. People have been paying the costs of raising their children for millennia.
That's not particularly true. The burden of raising kids has certainly changed drastically in the last 100 years. From tribes millennia ago, down to clans (involving grandparents and godparents) in the last centuries, diminishing to just the mother, and now there is no one particularly raising the child full-time, other than the government through daycare and school while the parents are at work.

I'm quite perplexed to see the right-leaning folks in here arguing for a hard cap at 100k when, in another thread, another right-leaning fella is arguing that our progressive tax system is counterproductive because it discourages people from trying to earn more. Setting a hard cap at 100k would have the same effect. Taking a 10k pay hike from 95 to 105k would result in a net loss of ((900*12*)-10k*0.7tax)=3800$ in @Lumber's case, and that's before taxes.

I have to agree that if our tax dollars was maxed out on efficient spending and we saw real results, I would be ok with it.

The reason the Liberals are pushing the gun thing is that the number of PAL's is increasing the largest demographic increases are with women and visible minorities in particular immigrants from authoritarian regimes. (China). If they don't act now, the support will wane as those groups change the narrative.

If it was me, I would get rid of income tax, or lower it to a 10% flat tax to cover the basics, and massively increase taxation on consumption/purchasing of goods and services, especially on sin items, and in the form of user fees. Let the people decide when and where to give taxation and force the government to live within its means.

My problem with our taxation now is I lose way too much off my pay cheque and the place is the shits. If they're going to tax me at 45% I expect some return.

We have autocratic governments? We have immigrants from authoritarian governments? Immigrants that saw a way out and took it? Immigrants that know what an authoritarian government is and the signs that lead them there? That have lived in that hell? Forced poverty, shortages of staples and medicine, a move of wealth from the commoner to the elites, bans on travel, government control of media, banks, income and industry? Governments that previously confiscated their firearms before putting them under the heel?

Perhaps they are seeing things that are setting off old, buried alarm bells. Things we are too blind and lazy to see, or if seen, ignored. It'll never happen here, right? Maybe, afforded the opportunity to arm themselves and not happy with the current situation that they've seen before and know the end results, they've vowed to themselves and family, never again.

The cool thing is they are following our ridiculous laws, likely to their detriment, to arm themselves. Law abiding firearms owners that respect the laws of their new country. What a novel concept.

Perhaps there is a reason in there somewhere. Perhaps.

Just spitballin'.

New Zealand's Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has announced she will resign from her post no later than February 7.
Ms Ardern made the shock announcement at the party's annual caucus meeting on Thursday, saying she "no longer had enough in the tank" to do the job justice.
The outgoing prime minister said she gave herself time over summer to consider whether she could continue in her post, but ultimately decided it was not possible.
"For me it's time," a visibly emotional Ms Ardern told members of the Labour Party.
"I just don't have enough in the tank for another four years. Have I given all I have to put us in the best possible position? I have. And I know that hand on heart.”
Ms Ardern said a new prime minister would be sworn in by February 7, but it may be earlier.

During her tenure as prime minister, Ms Ardern came under fire from critics who accused her government of unnecessarily locking down the islands at times when there was no evidence of Covid-19 spreading in New Zealand communities.
She clarified her resignation was for personal reasons, not because she did not believe she could win a re-election. She also emphasised she was "not leaving because it was hard".
"Had that been the case I probably would have departed two months into the job," she said.
"I am leaving because with such a privileged role, comes responsibility. The responsibility to know when you are the right person to lead, and also, when you are not."
She reaffirmed that it was "ultimately [her] decision" and that she only sought advice from a small number of people.
Ms Ardern said she wanted to spend more time with her family, which would involve taking her four-year-old daughter, Neve, to school and making her breakfast.
She is also looking forward to enjoying a cup of tea in bed that her fiancé, Clarke Gayford, would make her and finally being able to get married.
Addressing her fiancé, who sat in the front row of the press conference, she said: "Let’s finally get married".

The next general election in New Zealand will be held on October 14 and Ms Ardern said she still believed Labour would win.
“While I won’t be contesting the election, I know the issues that impact New Zealanders most will remain the focus of the government through this year and into the election," she said.
She hoped the next generation of politicians would value empathy and kindness.
“We have to be willing to reject some of those old characteristics as well," she added.
Following news of her resignation, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said his "friend" Ms Ardern had "demonstrated that empathy and insight are powerful leadership qualities".
"Jacinda Ardern has shown the world how to lead with intellect and strength," Mr Albanese said in a tweet.
"Jacinda has been a fierce advocate for New Zealand, an inspiration to so many and a great friend to me."

I'd be ok with a Scandinavian model if we actually had a Scandinavian mindset. Unfortunately Canadians have a Latin work ethic..... yep, we're lazy.

The NZ economy is in freefall atm and Jacinda was polling terribly, very likely was going to get run out of office Kathleen Wynne style.

Her, "the burden of leadership was too much to bare" resignation speech was uber cringe.

To pull back on topic, there was a comment elsewhere that stuck in my mind regarding Ardern. Apparently she was very popular internationally for some policies, but eventually became very unpopular domestically because she couldn't keep her Ministers, etc in line.

Once again, this shows to me that folks in other countries generally don't get the full picture of what's going on in a country, and why their leaders are seen as popular/unpopular. I wouldn't be surprised why many (most?) in the world would view PMJT as popular, when we in Canada know that it's pretty divided.
