In the sense that Trudeau’s mad that Meta of proving that it IS possible to follow the law, as well as do what you say you’ll do.

The government's argument could be expanded to say that Google needs to profit share with every single website that they display in a web search, whether the user clicks on the link or not, insisting that it is not fair for Google to be profitable and some of these websites to fail when Google is making billions off telling people looking to find a website like theirs that it exists.

Is the law actually in force yet? I know it received Royal Assent, but my understanding is all the relevant portions come into force when given effect by Governor in Council regulations. Have any such regs been made yet or is this Meta basically telling the government to suck it preemptively? I think it’s the latter, but not certain.

I think you're right, but I also believe they told the government this is what would happen if the bill passed.

So they are sticking to their position that the bill is the issue, and the regulations are irrelevant. Google seems to be holding out to see what the regulations are before shutting off the taps.

It looks like the government is in the Find Out stage of FAFO...

Trudeau shrugged, saying you'll bend to my will. Zuckerberg said, 'the fuck' and walked away from Canadian news. Law or no, it's his entity, it's not Canadian, trudeau has no say and Zuckerberg can do as he pleases with his own non Canadian company. Trudeau tried to play bully in the pool of international big boy corporations and got his ass handed to him.

Maybe if he hired Hunter to our Board of Trade, he could get the Big Guy to cajole or blackmail Zuckerberg into playing ball. Now that we're a socialist authoritarian country, bribes and payoffs should be the accepted norm.

He can indeed sort of do what he want with his own platform, subject to the reality that if they choose to do business in Canada and receive protection of various Canadian laws, they can be subject to Canadian law too. I was just trying to get clarity on whether the law has actually made Meta do anything yet, and I don’t think it has.

I’m just personally not gonna lose sight of the fact that Meta can be a super shitty and exploitive organization just because in this case they happen to be on sort of the right side of fighting what I think is a misguided law.

He can indeed sort of do what he want with his own platform, subject to the reality that if they choose to do business in Canada and receive protection of various Canadian laws, they can be subject to Canadian law too.
