Sound advice is given regularly in this forum which enables newbies to get their minds around the recruitment process. Many members have shown much patience in the delivery of their advice, and should be applauded.

I hope that the following may be of further help to anyone considering a military career path.

Let‘s look at three simple Recruiting Centre facts, according to the National Defence News & Events page:

1. Since August of 2000, recruiting staff have been receiving sales training.

2. Quotas for non-commissioned members have been eliminated; all occupations are either open or closed across the country.

3. The list of open or closed non-commissioned occupations are updated monthly.

With reference to paragraph (1), I submit that if you haven‘t at least decided the element (Land, Air, Sea) in which you want to serve -- you may have the decision made for you. Consider your options carefully before you commit, as "re-mustering" (or changing) to another trade later may not necessarily yield desirable results.

Paragraphs (2) and (3) allow you to check with Recruiting Centre staff on a monthly basis to verify whether your chosen trade is open. This can be easier said than done, as frustration due to a long wait can cause you to lose interest in the application process. Any current CF member will tell you that persistence will help ensure your success.

Making a list of your needs and motivations will assist you in making appropriate career choices. Although the two links below lead to an American site, the basic advice is worth taking.

"How to determine if a military career is right for you"

"How to choose which military branch to join."

Best of luck.
