'Women Tiger cadres shot soldier'
BBC

The women were manning the rebels' forward defence line
Women cadres of the Tamil Tigers were responsible for killing a soldier in the northern Jaffna peninsula, on Wednesday, a pro-rebel website says.
Tamilnet says the women fired when two soldiers advanced into a no-go zone at a lagoon at Killali.

The rebels say the encroachment broke the terms of a ceasefire which saw its third anniversary on Wednesday.

The military said the troops were in their designated area and that the rebels had violated the truce.

The ceasefire has been under pressure recently from incidents such as the killing of a senior rebel leader.

'Two versions'

Tamilnet said the two soldiers had advanced to within 40 metres of the Tigers' forward defence line on a reconnaissance mission and had taken aim at the cadres.

It said the ceasefire agreement allowed the sides to encroach only 50 metres into the 600-metre zone.

Both sides were urged to show restraint during the anniversary

The second soldier was wounded in the incident.

The rebels returned the body of the dead soldier to the army in the no-go zone late on Wednesday under the supervision of peace monitors.

The Scandinavian-led Sri Lankan Monitoring Mission that oversees the ceasefire has begun an investigation.

"We have two versions of the event," peace mission spokeswoman Helen Olafsdottir said.

She said the government had lodged a complaint saying the soldiers were in their designated area and were unarmed.

Ms Olafsdottir said the rebels had told peace monitors they "shot a soldier who was approaching them and that he had gone beyond the line with a hand grenade".

Both the army and rebels had been under pressure to observe restraint during the anniversary of the ceasefire.

The biggest recent threat to the truce came with the death of E Kaushalyan, the most senior Tiger killed since it began in February 2002.

The rebels blamed the government for carrying out the killing.

The government denied the accusation and said it was carried out by a rival rebel faction.

More than 60,000 people have died since the rebels began their fight for a homeland for minority Tamils.

As regards the Tigers, would anyone who knows more care to compare that situation to the IRA / Sinn Fein issue? Is the comparison valid if you look at Irish voting patterns in the US vs Tamil voting in Toronto?
