There is an old North Star
At Mirina it sits
waiting for me and all my kit
My time is done I‘ll soon be gone
I‘m moving on.

Last name puzzles me we had several, by any chance are you
the lad who borrowed my truck old US Reo one afternoon, and with
Evershead liberated two junked jeep transmissions. As I remember it. The
deal with locals went sour, you changed buyers mid stream. Another local
squealed, I wound up in cells my truck and we looked similar to local
eyewitness over night. Finally remember I was being treated at Canadian
MIR for fungus growing in my crotch. Local on ID parade nailed you or
your namesake. Guys had sold trannies for $200.00 US , trannies were
picked up by MPs repaired after being written off by RCEME returned to
service. Orders paraded for guys was $50.00 Canadian 65.00 US in those
days and fourteen days Extra Work Drill. The guys involved stayed
working every afternoon to avoid CB so UN got extra eight hours a day
from them. Only looser was local black marketer. And he was probably the
one who stole the new Bedford water truck that was supposed to go to
Swede Bn.
Do you remember Andy Cromwell knocking the then heavy weight world
champion Igor Johansson on his *** in the ring. bad deal Igor needed a
sparing partner, Andy was light weight.
Or Ron States and his POL truck. how about Larry Dumont, and Chief
Lorondel who when driving the Provost Marshal attempted to flog some
cigarette‘s. How about Hank Dollard from Gagetown I understand Hank did
four or more one year tours with UNEF 1 and the same amount of six month
tours with UNEF 2. How about Duce who was not allowed to carry a weapon
on Guard duty after he empty his mag one night near some singing
drinkers. He was issued a baseball bat and whistle while on guard. What
about the Officers Court Martial no names no pack drill that was open
except for members of B Platoon his old Platoon none of the seventy odd
lads were allowed entrance if you recall. It was held in the Blue Beret
club with Canadian MPs on the door. How about Bill Sole as a pinky Bill
and I had to pick up a local from Brazo Bn and take him to UN HQ in
Gaza. he was picked up inside their wire the night before, first thing
we did was cut the barded wire off his wrists and ankles he certainly
wasn‘t going any where. Or the DanNor? Rifleman who shot the speakers
out of the minaret in Gaza after standing guard duty under then for
several months. How about the unknown personnel from the Sigs villa in
Gaza who painted the Palestine victory monument yellow. That was before
the days of Arafat and the PLO. The convoys to Port Sid or Cairo and the
very infrequent resupply to Sharm el Sheik.
The unusual duties of searching incoming trains for infiltrators. Or
the Duty that our Wkshp PlatoonRCASC or the Infantry Wksp Coy RCEME
shared of their recovery trucks going out to pick up derailed rail road
engine‘s a almost weekly affair.
I appreciated a lot of the remarks in General Mackenzie‘s book, did you
read it? However a subaltern attached to Rhafa HQ slept in three hours
more then us in the working company‘s and didn‘t work a six or seven
day week. So his memoirs and ours a little different.
Fellow in Edmonton named Ed Davis was last truck out of Egypt in 67
when Nasser order Canadian and Indian Army Service Corps out with RC
Sigs and Logistics gone other national forces were unable to function.
For you others reading this at $150.00 per month before deductions
other nationals received full UN pay there were interesting ways of
adding to personnel incomes. In one case a truck carrying varied canteen
supplies was caught by local and UN authorities, that night every other
Canteen in force was broken into and a surprising amount of canteen
stores were stolen.
In passing the maternity hospital that was built with Zuibricks funds
at Khan Yunis was still operating in late 70s and do you remember the
little mongrel dog named Kush who out preformed the Swede trained German
Shepard‘s we adopted. She never growled or barked just bit strangers in
the lines. How about a young guy named Bradburry who was engaged to two
different girls in Canada and got a dear John from both in the same
week. We always suspected he mixed up his letters.
How about the Indian Pipe Band plying highland Marches at light
infantry beat 160 to the minute for 1962 Canada day parade ? The Recce
Sqn leading the Canadians looked like a children‘s skipping group.
And how about the changes in attitude. Remember a certain bald headed
Chrome dome Sgt. from the school who acted as if he still was in
Borden? He had a attitude adjustment meeting a few nights after arrival
with some of the WW II privates, changed entirely. Later in 62 he
dismounted a convoy and pulled his pistol on a local company commander
who was just being an ******* and attempting to have us miss the ferry
on way back from Cairo. One company of local Infantry back down fast. He
was popular with the boys then. How about the RCEME boys beating ****
out the over official local army check point guards near Yugo Bn, that
resulted in them moving the check point to another location.
Watching a local Armored Brigade move up from the west and dig in
behind us just over DM line and knowing as were all did that the force
had no anti tank weapons. You could always find their HQ though it would
be under the only scrub tree in the desert.
Moose I am at kplawson@csolve.net if you would like a few photos give me
your address, I have some of my year convoy to Sharm, Rhafa Gaza etc.
The best I ever saw was a film Bill Sole now deceased had I have no
idea what happened to those films he shot and pieced together as a home
movie
