Does the Navy consider your previous sea service in the Merchant Navy & the OOW certificate of competency issued by Transport Canada?

There used to be a Memorandum of Understanding between DND and TC that spelled out which qualifications issued by one party were recognized by the other, so there was some consideration granted for service in the other system.

Ask for it, but don't expect to suddenly be a watchkeeper in the Navy - you will have a lot to learn outside of Rules of the Road and navigation before you can stand a watch on a warship.

I did my MARS training with a former merchant mariner. He had to go through all of it with us.

Stay merchant marine. You'll find that you'll be micromanaged to death and still have to do all the training.

Thanks a ton for the guidance.

The Captains balls (or equivalent female parts) are on the line always, even when not on watch. So they tend to keep a careful eye on things.

I totally agree with that. However I fail to understand that as soon as people get Command they tend to change ,as if the power gets in their head.Is it the same in the Armed forces?
