CLARKE, Ross Graham, Sergeant (R.60737) - Military Medal - Armour (11 Canadian Armoured Regiment [The Ontario Regiment]) - awarded as per Canada Gazette dated 11 March 1944 and CARO/4226 dated 15 March 1944, "in recognitions of gallant and distinguished services in Italy." Recommended for immediate award by Lieutenant-Colonel H.R. Schell, Commanding Officer, 11 Canadian Armoured Regiment; document with Headquarters, 1 Canadian Armoured Brigade, 30-31 December 1943 where approved by Brigadier R.A. Wyman; at Headquarters, 1 Canadian Infantry Division, 1-10 January 1944 where approved by Major-General Chris Vokes; at Headquarters, 5 Corps, 10-11 January 1944 where approved by Lieutenant-General C.W. Allfrey; at Headquarters, Eighth Army, 13-15 January 1945 where approved by Lieutenant-General O.W.H. Leese; at 15 Army Group Headquarters, 18 January to 5 February 1944 where signed off by General H. Alexander.

On 15 December near Ortona (Map Reference 3316), having already been forced to evacuate two tanks which had been destroyed by enemy action, Sergeant Clarke and his crew were forced out of a third tank which was hit by fire from a concealed anti-tank gun. Having successfully evacuated his crew and realizing the danger to following tanks from this cunningly concealed gun position, Sergeant Clarke, under heavy machine gun and mortar fire, determinedly set out on foot towards his Squadron Leader's tank. Wounded on the way, he continued on until he was able to direct the fire of his Squadron Leader against the gun emplacement, destroying the gun and killing the crew. Only then did he return on foot to an ambulance post to receive medical attention. This most conspicuous act of bravery in the face of the enemy undoubtedly was a contributing factor to the resulting success of our attack on Ortona.
