Life as an Infantry Soldier?

FortYorkRifleman said:
Great info. How much attention do you guys pay to cardio? Is that the most important aspect of physical training I should focus on? I recently began "bulking" and have gone from 140 lbs to 143 in about a month. I can run 5km in under 25 minutes and am now looking to do 6km runs and beyond.

Running is good, and you will do a lot of it. But you will also do high intensity workouts and rucking a lot as well. You need cardio and strength. Don't focus on one aspect of fitness.

Also, I get that you want all the cool courses, etc but I wouldn't put to much thought into them. Either you get them, or you don't. Maybe you get them quickly or maybe in a few years if you get the opportunity. Either way, you still have a lot ahead of you before you are even eligible for those courses.

When you eventually get into battalion(assuming you pass your courses) your priority should be learning the job of a rifleman, etc. After that, getting onto the next available Weapon Det course, etc.

Definitely agree and truth be told I may not even make it into the CAF but just would like to know what's possible and what may lie ahead for me. Thanks for your advice

Welcome to the hardest job in the world.

The best advice is to work your a** off all the time, everywhere, and you just might make it into an infantry battalion. A lot of those who try, don't.

Then you can start thinking about other stuff.

I'll give it my all. I can't predict the future and don't know whether I'll make it in but regardless I am behaving, eating, training like I got the call for Basic.

Would you mind elaborating on that? I know Infantry DP1 is tough but do many people not make it?

Hi everyone,
I was just wondering if you get taught some kind of basic amphibious assault during battle school or not?

They used to do some training on the Assault boats(think large rafts).  I don’t believe it’s still done on BIQ/DP1 though.  Depending on the training schedule at battalion, you may do some training in and around water.

Alright, thanks for the info. In my opinion Canada should add that in, since it is a necessary skill.  I'm guessing that I won't get taught how to use a mortar anymore  :'( since they were handed over to the artillery. I'm curious to know the longest distance pack march is in battle school, although theres probably varies course to course.

It may not be covered at Battle school anymore, but don’t be under the impression it isn’t conducted at all at the unit level and on other courses.

You won’t learn mortars at battle school, however the 81s are coming back to the battalions.

Probably 13km

Well that's exciting. When are they going to transfer back to infantry? (I couldn't find anything online.)

I don't know if they teach 60mm mortar at present in battle school. Seems to come and go.  81mm mortar as far as I'm aware will remain a separate course taught to soldiers after they get to battalion.

The 81mm course will be taught in battalion, it won’t be given to everyone though; just like the other Combat Support specialities.
