Is the army for me?

-Skeletor- said:
Usually it is once you are posted to a unit after your QL3/DP1 training.

Living on your own? As in moving out of the barracks?

How many people do this? Looking for an exact figure/percentage or will me saying lots of people be enough?

Lots of people explains well enough thanks! Thanks for the reply. It's odd because last year this time I was reeling to get on the move and get done my BMQ and whatnot, for some reason now I have been having second thoughts. All the replies in here help alot, once again, thanks.

Maybe I will call down and have another chat with my recruiter, but I have a good feeling about this.

Just to be sure I have this down right, once you enroll into the CF and get ready to go do your BMQ, you new salary is $2663 a month as a Pte (1). Correct?

Then, one year from your enroll date, you advance to Pte. (2) at $3256 a month, and 2 years after enrolling you advance to Pte. (3) at $3911 a month?

I have switched and applied for Geomatics Tech. and have my interview in a few days, and I'm looking forward to it, as I've done alot of the duties of a Geomatics Tech. through a college diploma in Natural Resource Management I done a few years ago.

So once I am in my third year and at the pay scale of Pte. (3), I would have to sit in that pay level until advancing to Cpl (1) w/ Spec. pay, which would likely occur after 48 months of service from enroll date and if I have the required QL?

Just want to be sure of this, or do you have to sit in the Pte. (1) pay increment for some time?

You are correct your pay would start at increment level 1 on each anniversary of your swearing in you move to the next increment level of pay until capped at your rank level. Promotion to corporal is not always a given but it is unusual to see it delayed. Some occupations have circumstances that must be met such as finishing your QL5 training (sometimes referred to as Journeyman). Specialist pay only comes into effect if your occupation is listed as a specialist pay occupation.

Incentive dates at QL5+ levels are (or can be?) tied to the anniversary of becoming QL qualified.  At least mine were/are, it might be trade dependent.  Not that it matters much, it's still a yearly raise, the exact date of which might change based on the day you get your QL.

Man I forgot how the incentive jumped at Pte 1-2...

Geo Tech is a Spec 1 MOC.  IAW the policies, once you are both  (1) QL5 qualified and (2) rank of Cpl, you will start earning spec pay.

You might want to take a poke thru the Geo Tech Math PIP (Programmed Instruction Package).  You'll know if you have the math skillset from it, or have a good idea atleast.

Sorry man, I've googled this and whatnot but this is the first I've heard of this? Mind explaining a bit more where I can see this? Thanks.

Its the math Programmed Instruction Package, the MCE has one for the Geo Tech apprentice level IIRC.  I am on leave this week, but I can track it down next Monday unless someone else does it for you first.  Its Unclas.

Completed my new medical and interview, but have to see an optometrist about doing a stereoscopic test for the Geo Tech trade. Other than that it's now a waiting game for April 1st. It sounded pretty positive, but of course no guarantees!

Good luck to everyone else.

Hey again everyone. My spouse has been offered a teaching contract here in Newfoundland, and I was just wondering what would happen if I were to get an offer come April month for the trade that I applied for, and had to turn it down if my girlfriend was to sign this contract.

If I can't accept an offer at this time, I would want to keep my file on hand for in case I want to get back on with the process. Take note though, I had to send in copies of my finger prints when I first applied with the CF for a criminal record check (had a DUI 2 years ago), and it took about 8 months for these results to return so I could get my reliability status cleared, to get merit listed.

IF I decide to decline an offer at this time, and in the future I want to reopen my file, will I have to submit my finger prints and wait another 8 months for criminal record check and have my status cleared again? If this is the case we will have to decide accordingly.

Thanks again if you can advise.

I suggest you stay away from the Military. Close your file, walk away and never look back. I'm serious.

So to answer your original question: no.

Wow  ::) This is exactly what I get for posting on internet forums.

Thanks for your replies to those who have contributed, but I think I might have heard enough of this; too much negative feedback, all because I am taking this decision seriously. No further discussion needed here, I'll just speak to my recruiter.

Thanks again.

You ask a "yes or no" question, then pout because several people responded with "no"?

I think you've reaffirmed the views of those people.

Well, that should be a short conversation........

Dude, you asked a question, I answered. Don't like it ? Disregard it. We tend to dislike wishy-washy people, as the OODA loop is usually a quick process.

Taking the feelings of your spouse into account when thinking about joining the military is both a responsible and considerate thing to do. Since you'll be moving around a lot, away from home quite a bit, and sometimes work ridiculous hours, it's not crazy to realize your significant other has just as much a say in the whole thing as you do. Don't be afraid to turn down a job offer, it isn't the end of the world and it doesn't ruin your chances of joining the military later.

Just because you're weighing your options and being an informed potential-recruit, doesn't mean the army "isn't for you" and that you should "forget about it" and all that crap. It just means you're not a goon who isn't taking his/her loved-one's life into account when making a decision that will disrupt your way of life for several years to come. Once you're done of training and are finally posted to a unit, life becomes somewhat stable and you can focus on your spouse/family again, but until then things would be shaky, long-distance (maybe), and consist of lots of phone calls talking about how the clerks screwed up your pay again.

When the times comes, do what you have to do, just make the call that will make you happy.
