Everyone is saying that the forces aren‘t getting anything this year from the Budget other than that tax break...

..Then why does the DND website say we‘re getting 1.6 billion?

Yeah, the DND website is distorting the truth. It‘s not 1.6 billion that the CF is getting this year. It‘s $300 million for SAR, Hercs, and Buffalos. Which they claim is a $1.3 billion investment...I‘m still puzzled over that one. Then $300 million for operational support in Afghanistan over the next two years.

All that is just what has been committed to the CF for at least the past few months.

Because it is not new money, its funds that are allocated to cover costs which were underestimated at the time. ie, 300 million for Afghan because the DND operatons funds are short on $ and total costs in a couple yrs will be around $1 billion dollars to sustain that mission.

According to NDHQ, the $1.3-billion for new fixed-wing SAR a/c will be spread over a number of years. Just watch: By the end of the program it will be closer to $1.9 billion.
The $300-million in ops funding is to cover money already spent (and then some) in Kabul and $50-million for Haiti. I predict that Op Athena‘s first two rotos will cost $1.5- to $2-billion. Anyone want to start a pool?
