How are weapons issued in CF

As a civilian interested in military life, I always wondered how firearms issued to soldiers.  Is a soldier given a C7 on day one and told this is your weapon, take good care of it as it will always be your weapon.  Or, are weapons issued on a day by day, mission by mission, or otherwise as needed basis.  Do these weapons ever leave the confines of a CF base for anything other than training or operations?  Finally what weapons are available to what people?  Are all members issued pistols or only officers?  Who decides what people get what weapons?  I would live to hear as much as possible from serving members.  Thanks for any feedback.
