I hope a IDF plane lands unannounced on a Irish airfield and deposits several hundred Gazans to the loving embrace of the Irish, since they are so ready to slag the Israelis.

Not sure if Israel would consider gifting Ireland a passenger jet and other sundry military equipment to be a fair trade for taking in a plane’s worth of refugees. They wouldn’t be getting their plane back, and Israeli officials aboard would probably be learning in short order about the Irish criminal justice system.

There’s a incongruence in Israel’s statement: they claim Ireland, Norway, Spain et al are “legally obligated to let [Palestinians] enter their territory”. Why does Israel contend that to be the case while at the same time denying that Palestinians should legitimately be considered “refugees”? The statement also says “the people of Gaza should have the right to freedom of movement and migration, as is customary everywhere else in the world”. Yet obviously Israel will not grant Palestinians such freedom of movement and migration to enter Israel. So, their allegations of hypocrisy ring hollow.

Good to see generally, and I’m sure there’s lots that will be able to be done. There will also need to be recognition that a lot of protest will fall under ‘awful but lawful’ activity protected by the First Amendment. Splitting the different of where protest/dissent/advocacy turns into provable criminality will be a prosecutorial challenge.

Yup - letter's been on the DoJ's AG site since last Wednesday.

In other news, EGY's convening a bit ....

And how would they stop the Israelis from leaving?

You mean like just physically taking the plane off? That’s super easy, you just block it in with a couple vehicles across the landing gear. Or, if the situation is still too fluid to do that in the immediate vicinity of the aircraft, park a couple long vehicles across the runway.

This is all academic anyway, this is a stunt Israel would not pull.

I am sure there are some very willing enterprising attorneys see this as an opportunity to further their careers - for prosecutors and defenders.

I have no doubt the right prosecutors would be like a dog with a bone and won't let go.

Yes, but at a certain point either you have a criminal offence or you don’t.

That's what Uganda thought

…You’re suggesting that the raid against hijackers at Entebbe would be comparable to Israel landing a plane full of Gazans without permission in Ireland and having the plane seized and crew arrested for criminal offences?

Who do you propose would be giving the IDF overfly rights for their invasion of Ireland?

Seriously dude. Take a step back and reconnect with reality on this one. It’s a cute fantasy, but no, Israel isn’t going to just land a plane and disgorge a bunch of Gazans in a sovereign country- not if they want their plane back.

I am betting the Israelis can land, disembark the passengers and take off before the Irish can react.
An aircraft entering Irish airspace and heading to an airport without clearance would rapidly attract attention, cause alarm, and kick off certain pre-planned emergency responses at both local and national levels that I won’t go into. Suffice to say I’d take that bet.

That’s all setting aside practicalities as simple as “using which planes?” and “overflying which countries?” and “why would the Irish drive a stairs truck up to facilitate disembarkation?” and “in the year of our Lord 2025 what airport/police detachment doesn’t have an immediate plan ready in a drawer for a hijack response?”

Ireland would be getting themselves a free Boeing.
