That's not what I said at all. That may be true, but is contradictory to the message they are sending that they won't protect an ally that doesn't take realistic steps to defend themselves. My position is entirely along the line of let's take them up on that and show them we are ready willing and able to defend ourselves and thereby be worthy of their added protection. As a by-product we create a credible deterrence against any aggression by a future James Maddison who believed Jefferson when he said in 1812 that:
