I jest... Down with JIT Supply Chains.
JIT works in some sectors. Military materiel? Not so much.

CBSA a number of years ago found 1300 illegal guns in the 3% of cargo they searched. I suspect 50% of that cargo was targeted, but if you can double the number of searches, you will make a dent.
concur. Crossed at Lewiston at least 3 times a month for 5 years (until Covid) driving a semi. In all those trips I was only singled out once for secondary and maybe 8 or 10 times for Xray. I was never singled out returning to Canada and even the secondary did not include searching the cab. They were only interested in bugs.

Los Zetas, one of the most feared cartels, started in the 90s as Mexican army SOF who realized that they would make more money working for the cartels, then realized they'd make even more money becoming a cartel of their own. Safe to say that the mexican military isn't 100% reliable.
Not really correct.
It was started by a former Mexican Police senior officer, and then recruited a former Mexican Army Lt, and eventually recruited a platoon of the GAFE (Mexican Army SF) that had deserted.

The Mexican SOF hunted them down and killed the overwhelming majority of them.

Mexico has some very effective Military units doing counter narcotics - but there are a lot of issues in the Military, but that pales to comparison with the issues in the Mexican LE and Government.

We used to conduct Cross Border activity in conjunction with Mexican SOF and certain LEA's, but that dwindled down significantly in the last 4 years.

no new wars eh?

Going to war over land or resources is not the same as launching some Hellfire missiles on a terrorist cartels HQ. Especially if you have a joint strike with that countries military. Look at it as an anti terrorist strike like we've done with Iran. If there are designated as terrorists, any cartel gang members in the states, like MS13 can be grabbed off the street and held under a terrorist bond. No lawyers, no sentences.

Mexican Marine Corps is extremely effective, mostly because the Mexican Navy & Marine Corps recruit from the upper class while the Army recruits from the lower class.

Then there is the fact the Government disbanded the Mexican Federal Police due them "wanting a new approach" and created the National Guard to replace it. That's gone about as well as Surrey Police replacing the RCMP 😄

Yes. Which is why finding a solution to the demand side might be a better option. How that can be achieved is beyond my wheelhouse

Precisely why this is a challenge.

Cost vs risk analysis. I am willing to bet it’s been done or considered and someone didn’t like the math results.

You will not, ever, ever stop the demand for illegal drugs or the misuse of prescription drugs.
