CAN Enhanced (Permanent?) Fwd Presence in Latvia

At what point does the force outgrow its HQ?

Going off OS (wiki) that's now
2x Tank Coy/Sqn (Canadian & Polish
2x Inf Coy (Canadian and Slovakian)
2x Inf Coy Reinforced with Tanks (Spanish and Italian)

And follow up- with another Canadian Inf Coy you could organize

1st (CAN) Bn - Canadian Tank Sqn (15x Leo 2A4M), 2x Canadian Inf Coy
2nd (MN) Bn - Spanish Inf Coy, Italian Inf Coy, MN Tank Sqn (8x Ariete, 6x Leo 2E)
Bde Reserve - Square combat team of Polish Tank Coy and Slovak Inf Coy

A lot of CS (and HQ's) to arrange but is that not essentially the maneuver component a short bde with two mech CAB's and a reserve?

Edit, would clean it up nicely if you could get Spain to up the tank contribution to a full sub-unit, and Italy to pull out the Arietes and sub in a couple battery's of Pzh 2000

So this announcement still keeps the Leo 2A6's in our garage here in Canada. Perhaps there are bigger plans?

The A4M has upgrades that never made it to the A6 or to other A4. So, the A6 vehicles have the more immediate need of upgrades (and so are staying home to have this addressed).

How do you come to that conclusion from Canada sending Leopard 2 tanks with Canadian crews to be part of a Canadian-led Enhanced Forward Presence in Latvia? These are not donations to another country.
Never said they were donations. But I am getting the thought that the multinational forward Prescence will be ready for enforcement of peace talks when they happen. Or they think Russia is going to go ballistic in the near future.

The way I see it If you have some of the smaller contributors provide the initial Peacekeeping observer force then you have a better chance of Russia not messing around trying to entice the bigger countries into a confrontation, if and when the time comes for a DMZ along the borders of Ukraine, Russia and maybe Belarus.
Time will tell what happens.

But since people have stated on here that Canada does not have the capability to perform Depot level Maintenance on our Tanks, Welding, fixing hulls etc this would be a opportune time to have that done.

So instead of going from leading a Battle Group to leading a full Brigade we're just adding a less than doctrinal sized tank squadron to our current commitment?
It’s basically already a Bde.

Danish Bn
MN Bn
  • Cdn Coy
  • Italian coy
  • Spanish Cmbt Team
  • Polish tank coy
MN Artillery Bn
  • Cdn M777 bty
  • Spanish m109 bty
  • Slovakian Bty
  • Attach fwd observers
Joint Recce Sqn

My understanding is that Canada was asked to increase its commitment from leading eFP Latvia to deploying a full Canadian Brigade. The Danish Battalion is part of Denmark's Multinational Division - North deployment. Yes you could combine eFP Latvia with the Danish Battalion to create a short Brigade, but my understanding is that the Danish were joining with the Latvian Mech Brigade.

Even if we did join the Danes it would most likely be under Danish command since they are providing the Divisional leadership and a full Battalion with supporting elements while we're providing a Combat Team and a towed howitzer battery as part of a multi-national Battalion.

Not a terribly robust deployment for a G7 country but realistically the best we can probably support and sustain at this point.

Anyone note that were sending a 15 tank squadron and not a 19 tank squadron? That basically makes it a three troop vice four troop squadron?

Am I reading too much into that or have we just had a small doctrinal nudge?

Doctrine can be re-written. Maybe 15 is the new 19? 3x4 + 3? 80 tanks, or is that 76? That would buy you 5 squadrons of 15. 3 Squadrons to the LdSH(RC) and one each to the RCDs and the 12RBC? Or 3 to the Strathcona's, 1 in the shop and 1 in the warehouse?
