U.K. Election Result Boosts Royal Navy Ballistic Missile Submarine Program

By: Jon Rosamond

Had Labour emerged with the most seats in the House of Commons, its hopes of forming a viable government would have required the support of the fiercely anti-nuclear Scottish National Party. This was a worrisome prospect for advocates of strategic nuclear deterrence, who feared that a weak Labour leadership would inevitably cave in to SNP demands and scrap plans to renew the U.K.’s submarine-based Trident ballistic missile force.

If on the other hand the Conservatives had remained the largest party in a hung parliament, the expectation was that they would seek to re-establish their coalition government with the Liberal Democrats, a party which has campaigned to replace the continuous at-sea deterrent (CASD) — requiring four nuclear ballistic missile submarines (SSBN) — with a part-time version employing nuclear-armed cruise missiles.

By the early hours of Friday morning, however, it was clear that an unexpected surge in the right-of-center vote had given Cameron a slender overall majority in the Commons and the keys to 10 Downing Street for five more years.

With the prime minister vowing to retain the Trident CASD and procure new strategic missile submarines to replace the existing Vanguard-class boats, it was the best possible result both for the Royal Navy and for shipbuilder BAE Systems, reactor plant provider Rolls-Royce, through-life support contractor Babcock and the 850-or-so other companies who are, or will be, involved in the renewal program.

In 2011 the then Conservative/Lib Dem coalition decided to invest $4.67 billion in a five-year assessment phase for the Successor SSBN program (the figure has since grown to $5.14 billion). Activities in 2015 include $389 million for advanced design work by BAE Systems and the finalizing of plans for new manufacturing facilities at its Barrow yard.

Prince Charles 'black spider' letters: Blair acknowledged Iraq helicopter failings

Tony Blair, the former Prime Minister, admitted that there were 'limitations' in the army's fleet of Lynx helictopers in Iraq after warning by the Prince of Wales

Tony Blair privately acknowledged the failings of Britain's helicopters in Iraq after being warned by the Prince of Wales that troops were being put at risk because they lacked "necessary resources".

The revelation was disclosed in one of a series of secret letters sent by the Prince of Wales to ministers in which he championed the armed forces, farmers, organic school meals and alternative medicine.

The Queens Royal Lancers is/was the allied Regiment to Lord Strathcona's Horse(RC), guess they will have to change that in the books.

I'm shocked... even after Charles was appointed Col in Chief of the Irish Regiment of Canada...  ::)

Soldier forced to retire because he is too old, gets new job with RAF

Sgt Kevin Fulthorpe said he was a victim of age discrimination when he was forced to retire from the Army despite being able to run a mile-and-a-half in just over 10 minutes

A military fitness instructor who forced to retire from the Army for being too old has now been given a new job training recruits in the RAF.

Sgt Kevin Fulthorpe said he was a victim of age discrimination when he was forced to retire at the age of 61, despite claiming he was fitter than most men half his age.

The sergeant in the Army Reserve lost his job in March despite being able to still run a mile-and-half in just over 10 minutes – fast enough to qualify as a reservist paratrooper if he were a young recruit.

After his plight was widely reported he received a host of job offers and now has a new role with 614 Squadron of the RAF.

Sgt Fulthorpe, from Cardiff, said: “I didn't want to leave the Army – I loved being a military physical training instructor, but I was given my marching orders because of my age.

POD was my CO for awhile in 1 PARA. He was a tough guy to keep up with... in many ways!

I saw a pic of General Jackson visiting the Royal Irish just before the invasion of Iraq...looked like a mummified bag of bones.  IIRC, the caption read something along the lines of "The RSM is commenting on his striking good looks"  ;D.  Come to think of it, the author littered a number of captions like that around the book .

Pretty typical French attitude to humiliating (in their view) defeats.

The writers of the Asterix series often toy  with that one, in reference to Alesia, the location of the massed Gaul tribes defeat to Julius Caesar, a location they razed both from all their history books but also from their actual maps and place names thereafter so that no one can now find where it actually was.

Must be an awful lot of blank spots on French maps........

In all honesty as the owner of an otherwise worthless Military History Degree I'm well aware the French have their share of spectacular success's on the filed of battle. There defeats though are the stuff of legends, Dien Bien Phu, Waterloo, Camerone

Royal Marines training is gruelling, but it must remain so

The death of a Royal Marine trainee on Dartmoor will lead to questions about the safety of commando selection. But it is a brutally difficult process for good reason, says former Royal Marine Mark Time

Break up the RAF and stop buying British
The defence review is a chance to stop wasting money on tanks, frigates and pilots - and break the dominance of BAE Systems

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/defence/11642595/Break-up-the-RAF-and-stop-buying-British.html

We should expand our fleet of “Reaper” strike drones, and get many more Tomahawk cruise missiles. We could get some tailhook F-35C stealth jets down the road, but it would probably be better to wait for an unmanned successor.

We should cancel our order for A400M European transport planes, and buy more C-17s and C-130s cheaply from the US.
The Navy should not be allowed its new frigates: instead it should purchase basic ships to act as floating bases for helicopters, Marines and Tomahawk missiles.

The Army should likewise move away from tanks and artillery, and towards integrated air support. If the soldiers really feel a need for Apache helicopters once they have F-18s and Reapers, we could replace them: but we should buy straight from Boeing this time, rather than a job-creation scheme in Yeovilton.

If you really don’t want to close down the RAF, then fair enough – we can probably postpone that for a while. But the really important thing is to stop using the defence procurement budget as an industrial subsidy, and start using it for defence.
