I‘ve always looked at the Armour Corps as having the best all round training for its‘ soldiers and officers. They must begin as basic Infanteers, and get Trades trg in D&M and Gnry. They must become proficient at wpns handling, navigation (map reading), Comms, tactical movement, and in the case of Recce, highly skilled at patroling. In the end an Armoured Crewman is a well rounded and highly trained soldier who usually has a good grasp of the overall tactical situation in a battle.

As this talent retires, where will the Corps go? Young kids, many of them ‘Gamers‘, don‘t seem too keen on learning the old ways of staying alive and doing the job. Will they have to die in droves to learn?

:soldier: Thought I‘d get off the MSG POS topic for a while with a more cheerful matter. :D

By basic infanteers, do you mean the SQ course or do they get extra training?

I put my application in for Armoured last week... I‘m twenty-six and don‘t think of myself as a gamer.

I want to take as many courses as I can and learn as much as I can from those who went before.

I am thinking that I will be a little bit older then some of the recruits coming in and hope my maturity and work experience will enable me to approach what is being taught to me is what will keep me alive, if the need were to ever arise.

Echoing Exvitae‘s sentiments, I applied for armoured three months ago, and it is my purpose to further the traditions rather than have my presence detract from them through sloth or indolence.

I question the motivations of some of the participants to this site. I don‘t mean to come across as dogmatic, but some of them look upon the army as some giant trade school. The army is predicated on the combat arms, and I would question the resolve of a person whose career doesn‘t anticipate participation in an imbroglio in some distant land.

I was twenty-five or six when I joined the Armour Corps (Regular Force) so I have been there. Right now, however, I have the exact opposite of what there was when I joined. Back then a Newbie would come into a Troop of experienced troopers and be taught the ropes. Now I have a Troop of Newbies, and one experience Cpl. This is the state we are at.

Remember this little tidbit and you will do well....All Soldiers are Infanteers First, then Tradesmen.

As for extra training. It will depend on what Unit you go to, what Trade you are in, etc. Infantry, of course, go into greater depth in their training to learn their Trade.

I have a few more questions about armoured too,

As a future armour officer, will my phase training actually prepare me for the real life workings of an armour troop, or will i just be a new 2Lt to babysit for awhile, while i try to catch on?

Secondly, what would my duties be when and if i finally make it to a regiment?

Finally, what do we actually do on a field exercise? hang out and smoke and then chase the infantry?

I know i sound ignorant but i was a former infanteer, and to be honest the only time i‘ve even been in an armoured vehicle was at the calgary stampede.

thanks for the answers

What worries me even more is the amount of training we‘re able to give our newer soldiers...and our older ones.

When I joined up, I averaged 9 months a year in the field. First year I was married I was gone 11 months. All training, by the way. We drove the tanks from Base to the field...Heck, we drove them everywhere.

Our troop had mostly the same members for almost 5 years...unheard of, but boy could we work well together. When was the last time you‘ve done hatches down, radio silence advance to contact? ..Well, spend 9 months a year in the field, and you can.

Experience, time in the field, etc is crucial..

We have the same problem Forces wide, so at least the Corps isn‘t any different- not that it makes it any better.

Kosstro- You‘ll have enough knowledge to start. Keep your eyes open, question everything as to why it‘s happening, listen VERY Carefully to your Snr NCO‘s, then make your own decisions!

Franko- get a grip- "imbroglio" is Italian ration packs...sheesh.

Cheers-Garry

Garry, if I may...

Officer...Officers spend most of their time in the office. They are responsible for the paperwork, and there is a lot if it, especially with Human Rights, etc. They will be tagged by their OCs and the CO to do a mirade of duties and tasks, few of which even deal with their Troops. As a new Officer to the Regiment, you would be advised to take the advice of your Snr NCOs. This is not eighteenth century England. Your NCOs will handle most of the Administration for your Troop. The Troopers will handle all the Maint, so stay off the ‘floor‘.

Exercises are very few and far between. Money! Know your Gunnery and how to navigate. Don‘t think that since you have graduated from Armour School you know more than your NCOs who have been doing this for ten to twenty years, and some of whom you will be surprised to find may have higher creditials than you. And of course, never Micromanage. It will do you in.

As I alluded to earlier, Crewmen are quite resourceful and imaginative.

im interested in this occupation but how much PT is involoved?(i dont mind pt) and my second question is what are the chances of me going into another trade (re muster) like?

Patty

In the Combat Arms PT is looked at quite seriously. You will find however that standards are getting lower, and when you get to a Unit the older guys are in much better shape than the younger guys. What PT you get in Basic is usually no way near what you will get in a Unit.

You are going to sign a three year contract, and like anywhere else, you will be expected to fill your end of the bargain. Usually, it is three to five years before you can change trades. Some trades require even more experience before they will accept remusters.

I was thinking about this thread today at work here is the fruit of that thought:

The only phrases coming out of my mouth for the first year will be "Yes, Master Cpl. No, Master Cpl. Could you explain that again, Master Cpl?" Or Sgt. or Warrant or Lt. or whatver. I just want to learn.

I do have some aspirations, though... how hard is it to get driving a Leopard? I‘d really like to drive heavy armour. Are they phasing the Leopards out and going to other things or what?

Hmmmm....

Deferment to superior rank and tank driving in one post. ;)

If you run into George or Franko, it‘ll probably be "Yes MCpl, here‘s another beer. One more time please, regail me with the glorious stories of when the Corps was truly made of staunch men and their mighty machines of mayhem" :D :warstory:
