I have searched and searched, on the internet and this site and have found conflicting evidence between the legal size of an AR-15's magazine, does anyone here know the true legal size? Or can they direct me to a legal document showing me the amount?

Thanks guys,

- Mike

Q7. What is the maximum number of cartridges that a firearm magazine can legally hold?

A7. As set out in Criminal Code Regulations, some large-capacity magazines are prohibited regardless of the class of firearm to which the magazines are attached. As a general rule, the maximum magazine capacity is:

    * 5 cartridges for most magazines designed for a semi-automatic centre-fire long gun; or
    * 10 cartridges for most handgun magazines

A large-capacity magazine is not prohibited if it has been permanently altered so that it cannot hold more than the number of cartridges allowed by law. Acceptable ways to alter a magazine are set out in the regulations.

There is no limit to the magazine capacity for semi-automatic rim-fire long guns, or for other long guns that are not semi-automatics.

Note: Four minutes between you asking the question and me providing an answer from an official Government website thanks to GOOGLE.

much thanks however!

AR-15 mags are 'usually' 30 rd mags pinned to accept only five (5/30 mags). However they may be had in 10 round (5/10) and 20 round (5/20). Any centrefire rifle magazine, with the exception of Lee Enfieid .303 cal 10 rounders and a couple of others, are to be permanently modified or pinned to accept no more than 5 rounds. Having anything over that will get you charged for possessing a prohibited device. Pinning involves blocking the follower so it can't be loaded past a certain point with a device not easily removed. A pop rivet is acceptable, a screw is not.

Having said all that, a centrefire pistol is allowed to have a, maximum, ten round magazine. Rock River Arms produces the LAR-15 Pistol, which is a 'handgun, commonly available in Canada', which may have a capacity of (not more than) ten shots. The magazines for the RRA LAR-15 pistol fit in an AR-15 rifle. The magazines have to be stamped, by the manufacturer, as for the LAR-15 pistol to allow them to hold ten rounds. They can be used in an AR-15 rifle. You can buy them here: ASC-LAR15-223-10

That is awesome, perfect clarification thanks to both of you for the good answers!
