    This guy is a quack!

:o It makes Vimy Ridge look like a cakewalk?!?!?  Ummm... Granted we have lost some good troops over there, and there is no question that the threat level is high...but...we are a long way off from the slaughter of the First World War.  I don't see how anybody can take this guy seriously.

Help Identifying Uniform - Winnepeg Cavalry?

I admit, I wasn't really paying much attention to the helmet plate...which appears to be the coat of arms of Great Britain...I don't know a whole lot about the period in question...but it seems to be the sort of nondescript and indistinct sort of thing the Crown used to give to...

Help Identifying Uniform - Winnepeg Cavalry?

I suspect it is the period uniform of the Cavalry School Corps (today The Royal Canadian Dragoons).  I would say it is definitely a cavalry uniform given the style of helmet, the sabre, striped trousers, boots and so forth.

    A Pittance of Time

Thanks for bumping this thread.  I had not heard Mr. Kelly's song nor seen the video before.  I agree with masny who posted earlier that this should be played at schools. Here in Port McNicoll, the kids obviously have no respect for those who serve.  They actively vandalize the Cenotaph.  They...

How Long Have You Served in the CF?

I like that and I have heard similar things from other vets myself.

    Help Identifying Uniform

Lania, The uniform appears to be WWII vintage.  However, the basic battledress of the Second World War lasted well beyond the war years as the standard issue uniform.  The picture here does not show any identifying features such as unit insignia, brigade/division patches, or medal ribbons.  If...

    The Indian Department (Circa 1830)

Thanks Bill! I have been through a few books and that may include that one.  I'll have to check my records.  Most secondary sources I have consulted on the Indian Department had very little on uniforms and when they did, they tended to talk about the Seven Years War and Rev War periods.  I will...

    The Indian Department (Circa 1830)

niner, I had the same notion today...but it will have to wait until I get back to the office Monday morning.

    The Indian Department (Circa 1830)

I may want to pick your brains for ideas on how to return artifacts to local First Nations.  I operate as a consulting archaeologist in Ontario but I am not allowed to give things to the First Nations communities, nor do we have the ability to save their sites.

How Long Have You Served in the CF?

I taught on a recruit course with a Burmese doctor aged 46.  He wasn't allowed to practice until he developed english language proficiency.  He decided that joining the army was a good way to get to learn eanglish and earn a pay cheque...ummm... I can just imagine the language he picked up.  He...

How Long Have You Served in the CF?

Now.. 13 years later and a remuster... I'm a Lt with just a CD. There is no dishonour in that.  There are many who have served with distinction, even on OPs who did not get any gongs.  We don't get to decide who goes and what counts for medal recognition.  But...I do know that anyone who has...

    The Indian Department (Circa 1830)

niner, I realize that Joseph Brant is an important figure in the American Rev War period and in the UE settlemet history of Ontario...I'm just saying I am not convinced they would have much info on the Idian Department of the 19th C., especially minutae like uniform buttons.  I am not writing...

How Long Have You Served in the CF?

Looking at the posts people have made to this board and the long service many have made, takes me back to my first Jr. Ranks Christmas Dinner.  When the meal was over and we settled into a night of beer drinking...I remember a buddy of mine looking around the room at some of the Officers and...

How Long Have You Served in the CF?

Cadets and Civilian Instructors are not, strictly speaking, members of the CF.  I am interested in those who actually took the "Queen's Shilling" as they say.  As a point of clarity, I am not intending to slight these people, their family members or our allies for their meaningful and...

How Long Have You Served in the CF?

One additional thought.  I am also curious to see how people interpret the poll results.  Hopefully, we will get at least 1,000 or the 10,000 plus users to vote and then we will be able to perhaps have a meaningful discussion about what the poll results say about this site... I would be very...

How Long Have You Served in the CF?

In reading a lot of the posts on here, I am left with the impression that the majority of users have some length of service.  I suspect a high proportion of users have their CD.  I am curious to see how it breaks down.  Enjoy.

A Question- Was There A 'Kings Sergeant"?

Mayhem, Call these guys and give them the S. No.  They should be able to give you everything available. Requests for information from a military service file or for a statement of military service should be addressed to Library and Archives Canada at 1-866-578-7777.

A Question- Was There A 'Kings Sergeant"?

The award of the MC is a high distinction.  You can probably find the original citation describing the action that led to the award.  It also seesm likely that the confusion over the "King's Sergeant" business may relate to his promotion and decoration about the same time.  There is probably a...

A Question- Was There A 'Kings Sergeant"?

Why don't you send Old Sweat the S. No. in a private email?  No need to post it here in a public forum.  ;)

    The Indian Department (Circa 1830)

niner, In the past my experience with the 6 Nations has been that their data and interest is specifically targeted to persons and events having a direct relationship of significance to their history (which is understandable).  I rather doubt they would have information on the time period in...
