US Small Unit Ops in Zabul Afghanistan

I picked this one up from the ARRSE board.  It is from the Christian Science Monitor.  Some interesting discussion about Section, Platoon and Company tactics in the Zabul province in Afghanistan.

The Taliban seem to want to come out and fight - will concentrate 150 bodies (no marksmanship skills) to try and overwhelm an "independent" platoon.  Set themselves up as a target for supporting air power and mopping up by accompanying "independent" platoons.

Very interesting.

I learned about the Christian Science Monitor very recently. It looks like a very good paper for international news. They claim they ship 50 copies to the White House daily.

Interesting. The baddies have obviously changed their MO since I was in Afgh last year. At that time US CJTF76 inf units were rarely ever engaged at close quarters: the enemy was mainly relying on rocket and mortar attacks, sniping and ambushing (usually not very effective, but sometimes tragically very lethal). The very few times the enemy ever "massed" he usually attracted air, aviation or arty fires pretty quickly. I was very impressed by the Us inf leaders, both Army and USMC, that I met there. They certainly knew their business. Good luck and a safe tour to the soldiers of 173 Abn Bde.

Cheers

Sorry, no direct link
On the right hand side there's a features section, go to page 2 and look at US in Afghanistan to see some spectacular images of fighting in Zabul prov.
