I guess it makes sense to put them on the Zumwalts since they never did get the Advanced Gun Systems and their million dollar per round long-range land attack projectiles.

I wonder why they don't use more conventional munitions for those guns?

I'm guessing much shorter range? Isn't that the whole selling point of the AGS, small caliber gun with large caliber range so battleships could be replaced for shore bombardment but remain cheaper than cruise missiles.
