Ukraine - Superthread

Don't the Greeks have a primarily conscript army that pays about 2 bigmac's per month?
The army consists of some 5 divisions and other commands comprising some 19-20 brigades and another 6 Mechanized/armoured National Guard but consists of only 90,000 men of which 30,000 at any given time are conscripts with a one year service term and an automatic transfer to the reserves at the end of their term.

Obviously at the best of times they can't man all the equipment with their 90,000. On the other hand they have close to 200,000 reservists so it's easy to see that, like their personnel, much of the equipment has to be in various states of reserve preservation. Reservists have only a 1 to 10 day per year recall requirement which is barely enough to certify they are still alive much less do any training. That makes them dirt cheap but pretty rough.

Most brigades are heavy mech brigade groups with one tank battalion and two or more mechanized infantry battalions plus the usual support elements. That could mean approximately 5,000 per brigade and the reservists would be sufficient to fully man the equipment that is there assuming it is serviceable.

Interesting little article on Greek conscription (and by extension reserves) here.

From what I been hearing lately from Istanbul you get the feeling that they think the Greeks are only leasing Athens and the surrounding Countryside.
Mind you the Greeks have played that game as well. Usually one or the other government is in need of some sort of distraction .

'The situation is stably f----d': Russians close in on gateway to Bakhmut

With each explosion, the pigeons over Chasiv Yar scatter in a new direction. Their murmuration reforms, there is another boom, and the flock splits again, writes Roland Oliphant.
Then somewhere, the rapid drumming of a Grad rocket volley. Serhiy Chaus, the mayor of this small Donbas town, does not flinch.

“Stable. Stably f----d,” he said when asked to summarise the situation in his town on Monday morning.

Plus don't the Greeks think Constantinople (hmmm Istanbul) is being squatted on? And Constantine XI with raise from the walls and lead the downfall of the Turks? LOL

The Greek fleet of tanks, wheeled, and tracked vehicles is huge. How do they do it? That is my main question?
I’m guessing one of those fleets is in decent fighting form, while the other tanks are in storage.

Now whether the tanks in storage were properly maintained & fixed up prior to going into storage is anybody’s guess…

Conscription is the primary reason they are able to afford some of the kit they do, as the conscripts don’t make much money at all.

In Canada, a big chunk of our budget goes towards pay & benefits, with most capital acquisitions happening outside/seperate of our annual budget.

In Greece, they make something akin to what another member said upthread - about 2 Big Mac’s. (A big chunk of their budget goes towards kit & operations, not so much towards pay & benefits)

It's mainly about territorial limits and oil, of course, and those talks never go very well ;)

Rumour mill is reporting that the US is planning on supplying Ground-Launched Small Diameter Bombs (GLSDB) for the HiMARS.

I wonder how soon though. They need some deeper strike capabilities right the hell yesterday.

Denmark is preparing to send Ukraine stocks of its Leopard 1A5DK's. Older tanks, but they will do the job

One thing that confuses me about this. If a 42 tonne 105mm armed vehicle with early 80's tech and armour can be considered and successfully employed as a tank in a peer war, why must a 38 tonne 105mm armed vehicle with 2020 tech and armour be obscurely named and adamantly exclaimed as not a tank and not suitable for being used a tank?

Why is the US constantly adding little by little more advanced shells/missiles to the M777's and HIMARS? I understand that they are reluctant to give them 'long range' weapons (the definition of 'long range' it open for interpretation) but why not give them everything under range X that can be fired by the M777's and HIMARS? There is little doubt that this approach would undoubtedly save Ukrainian lives, kill/wound more Russians, possibly reduce the equipment attrition suffered by the Ukrainians and add to the attrition suffered by the Russians, strengthen Ukrainian morale/resolve and accordingly weakened Russian morale/resolve.

It is simply a political question of resolve by the US?
