Trudeau's Public Health Agency pays non-refundable $300,000 deposit during global pandemic for ski resort trip

The Public Health Agency of Canada has confirmed that they paid over $300,000 to host a private convention during the start of COVID-19 lockdowns throughout the country.

According to Blacklock's Reporter, the convention, which included meetings at a ski hill, was held "at the same time it ordered cancellation of hockey games, church services and other public events, records show."

The convention's deposit is unable to be refunded, she went on to say.

“The payment is a non-refundable deposit,” said Natalie Mohamed, a spokesperson for the Health Agency. “We are in discussions with the vendor to renegotiate dates.”

In all, the bill being shouldered by the Canadian taxpayer totals $319,157, including $28,250 for "conference space and facilities" for a ski trip that did not happen. That payment was made a full day after the World Health Organization declared a worldwide pandemic.

“The meeting in question was the biannual Canadian Immunization Conference,” said Mohamed. “A deposit was to be paid by March 31. The process to award the contract and pay the deposit was already underway when the pandemic was declared.”

The payment was also made after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told Canadians to take the pandemic "extremely seriously," urging Canadians to stay at home to "prevent from overburdening the health care system."

Dr. Theresa Tam, Canada's top doctor, urged Canadians on March 11 to cancel all public events.

What a poorly written article; had to read it a few times to figure out what they are talking about. As near as I can tell, the event didn't take place; what was paid was the standard booking fee after some kind of contracting/bidding process. Obviously edgy reporter guy has never booked anything; this is common with any larger conference, and most conferences that delayed/canceled are in the same boat. Do people think contract terms and conditions no longer apply?

What a crap headline as well; it's not Trudeau's PHA, it's Canada's. I guess he's at least up front about his bias, but what a load of wasted time investigating this kind of spend to generate some faux outrage.

What did the Liberals say about a glass or orange juice that cost 8$ or $14....whatever the price was?

It was scandalous!!

Agreed.  The conference was scheduled for December 1-3, 2020; it's still scheduled for Dec 1-3, 2020 except it will now be a virtual event.  The attendance at the last CIC (Dec 4-6, 2018) was 881, previous years were 810 in 2016 and 880 in 2014.  The previous years were held in Ottawa and according to a banner in a Jan 14 tweet

the 2020 conference was also planned for Ottawa (ski hills?).  A more recent tweet has the location on the banner as "virtual".

The 'Post Millennial' is a heavily biased outlet, and generally it's worth looking for other sources on claims they make. The website has some of the same leadership as the facebook groups running under the label 'Ontario Proud', 'Canada Proud', etc.  One of the execs from both organizations is presently Erin O'Toole's social media engagement guy, and has previously had lots of other fringe involvement with the CPC.

The Post Millennial will generally seek a spin to any story that is specifically against the Liberals, regardless of whether facts support it or not. There's not a lot of original reporting or quotes from sources. The quality of reporting leaves a lot to be desired.

Good point. They really need to up their game too. I mean 'only' a $300,000 waste?

I mean, come on guys, there's alot more $ than that being flushed down various toilets out there by any decent ruling government :)
