>In the US, they are investigating who is supporting, funding, coordinating, and communicating with the violent groups to sow unrest.

Never underestimate "self-organization".  Shadowy backing organizations aren't needed, nor do people need more than email and mobile phones to co-ordinate among themselves.  Just another "invisible hand".

Or a well placed Facebook post.

A new article by Andrew C. McCarthy at NRO where he delves into one of the anti-racketeering crimes in the federal criminal code be believes may be "about to get a work out" against some of these radicals.  There is potential for very serious penalties.  Great news.

Good find.

Will be interesting to see how it gets applied and to who.  Left and right wing radicals seem to be in ample numbers these days.

This use of the 'Travel Act' by Trump and Barr has just got to be meant for after Trump is elected for a second term. It's just too blatantly an attempt at fascist control by Trump to be acceptable by the FBI/CIA/etc.

And really, is Trump's attempts to get Federal troops or cops into places like Portland, Oregon anything more than political spin to make it look like Oregon can't handle it's own problems?

Hi Don

Two sherriffs in counties refused the Gov's request/order to help Portland. So it looks like Oregon is having trouble keeping law and order in their own back yard.

Doesn't smell like Trump's attempts are legit to me Shawn, but what matter as long as the popcorn holds out in Canada.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they were so-called “constitutional sheriffs”.

No they are not. They are two elected sheriffs from adjoining counties (which have, in part, some of Portland's suburbs) which have mutual saasitance agreements with Portland.

The stated reasons are that the request hadn't been discussed with them and that they are unhappy with what they consider offenders not being held accountable for their actions.

See here.

Not wanting to get your officers up for failure is reasonable.

One of the best things to come out of the 2011 Vancouver Riots was the relentless prosecution of offenders, demonstrating that we will not tolerate breakdowns in civil society by those who take advantage of the moment.

Kudos to those Sheriffs for looking out for their officers and not sending them into the maelstrom to enforce laws where there is no plan to enforce them.

He doesn't like to talk about domestic terrorism unless it's "antifa":

Former DHS Official: Trump Pouring 'Fuel On The Fire' Of Domestic Extremism

A former top Department of Homeland Security official who resigned in April says the Trump administration is creating the conditions for domestic extremism to flourish in the United States.

Elizabeth Neumann left her position as assistant secretary of counterterrorism and threat prevention after three years at DHS. In an interview with NPR's Steve Inskeep, she offers a candid assessment of the counterterrorism community's failure to address the threat posed by domestic extremism.

She says the administration is paving the way for even more violence.

...

"The threat of domestic terrorism is not from antifa. It is from these right-wing movements."

Russia's at it again (as if we didn't know).

Intelligence bulletin warns Russia amplifying false claims mail-in voting will lead to widespread fraud
By Zachary Cohen, CNN
Thu September 3, 2020

Washington (CNN)An intelligence bulletin issued by the Department of Homeland Security warns that Russia is attempting to sow doubt about the integrity of the 2020 elections by amplifying false claims related to mail-in voting resulting in widespread fraud, assertions that have been repeatedly pushed by President Donald Trump, according documents obtained by CNN.

"We assess that Russia is likely to continue amplifying criticisms of vote-by-mail and shifting voting processes amidst the COVID-19 pandemic to undermine public trust in the electoral process," the bulletin, first reported by ABC News, reads.

The news comes one day after Attorney General Bill Barr condemned states for encouraging mail-in voting in an interview with CNN's Wolf Blitzer. Barr also downplayed Russia's well-documented attempts to help Trump in presidential elections, including in this election cycle, instead pointing the finger at China despite the fact intelligence agencies have not said Beijing is actively meddling in the election.

The revelation adds to the well-documented body of evidence that Russia is again interfering in a US presidential election, and also clearly indicates Moscow is tailoring its messaging to amplify false narratives that benefit the Trump campaign.

From The Atlantic:

Trump: Americans Who Died in War Are ‘Losers’ and ‘Suckers’
The president has repeatedly disparaged the intelligence of service members, and asked that wounded veterans be kept out of military parades, multiple sources tell The Atlantic.

When President Donald Trump canceled a visit to the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery near Paris in 2018, he blamed rain for the last-minute decision, saying that “the helicopter couldn’t fly” and that the Secret Service wouldn’t drive him there. Neither claim was true.

Trump rejected the idea of the visit because he feared his hair would become disheveled in the rain, and because he did not believe it important to honor American war dead, according to four people with firsthand knowledge of the discussion that day. In a conversation with senior staff members on the morning of the scheduled visit, Trump said, “Why should I go to that cemetery? It’s filled with losers.” In a separate conversation on the same trip, Trump referred to the more than 1,800 marines who lost their lives at Belleau Wood as “suckers” for getting killed.

Belleau Wood is a consequential battle in American history, and the ground on which it was fought is venerated by the Marine Corps. America and its allies stopped the German advance toward Paris there in the spring of 1918. But Trump, on that same trip, asked aides, “Who were the good guys in this war?” He also said that he didn’t understand why the United States would intervene on the side of the Allies.

Trump’s understanding of concepts such as patriotism, service, and sacrifice has interested me since he expressed contempt for the war record of the late Senator John McCain, who spent more than five years as a prisoner of the North Vietnamese. “He’s not a war hero,” Trump said in 2015 while running for the Republican nomination for president. “I like people who weren’t captured.”

The desperation on the left hasn’t yet reached its crescendo yet.  But it’s getting close.  Imagine what another month will reveal?
