Dear Andy,

I‘m not 100 sure on this, but I seem to remember that 1 Cdn Div was reactivated on 1 Apr 88, in Kingston, Ontario CANADA. At the time we had 4 CMBG in Germany 4th Canadian Mechanized Brigade Groupheadquartered in Lahr with most of the units, but having a mechanized battalion stationed up the autobahn by a couple of hours at Baden-Baden.

The 1 Cdn Div HQ was stationed in Kingston and the plan was that it would deploy to Germany if the Soviet Union invaded. To complete the Division in this plan, a second formation - 5 GBMC Cinquieme Groupement Brigade Canadienne- from Canadian Forces Base Valcartier, in the province of Quebec, just north of Quebec City.

We never did get to exercise that plan and when the Berlin Wall came down in 1989, the raison d‘etre of the Division tended to evaporate too. Today, it is a contingency and planning HQ. It has been deployed a couple of times, to command efforts fighting floods and ice storms. It‘s next gig is to command our forces deployed to counter Y2K generated disasters over the year-end.

Does this help? Hope so. Michelle.
