This is more of a question for current RCMP members, but if you have managed to obtain some first hand experience, feel free to share.

I was just curious as to what is the most common background traits that you'll find with the RCMP? Is it Military, is it Provincial or Municipal Police Services, is it straight out of High School, or is it Post Secondary Education be it University, or College (and more specifically, Police Foundations).

Or is it so mixed, that a question such as this is entirely useless?  ;)

It's a mixed bag of backgrounds. The greater breadth of life experience one has going into the interview, the more you will have to speak about and provide examples for.

I would definitely advise someone considering a LEO career not to take Criminology or Justice studies, it's too narrow a focus in case things don't work out. Besides recruit training will provide all you basics that need to do the job, so why not bring some additional skill sets or knowledge in a seperate field to the table.

A military background will definitely provide the life experience and give you examples to bring to the table, however it isn't the be all and end all. Law enforcement recruiting goes through cycles as well, some years post secondary education is highly sought after, in other years it's language skills and or life experience. in addition the background of your recruiter may put weight on different things as well.

A fair mix of service orientated work experience in a leadership role, education, volunteer service, community involvement will all stand you in a good position for your interview.

Cheers
Noneck
