Apparently this attack was conducted by Islamic militants retaliating for the Kenyans' deployment of troops to Somalia to counter the Islamic group Al Shabab.

RIP to Annemarie Desloges, one of the Canadian victims at the mall attack who was working for DFAIT and Immigration Canada.

Kenya mall attack: Two Canadians among 68 dead, Islamic terrorists still hold hostages, large explosion heard

A stunning terrorist attack at a shopping mall in Kenya’s capital on Saturday has struck home in Canada with the death of two Canadians, including a 29-year-old diplomat who worked at the Canadian embassy. The Islamic extremists behind the attack are holding an unknown amount of hostages and there are reports they executed the Christians among the hostages.

The Kenya Red Cross said Sunday that the death toll rose to 68.

Nairobi, Kenya (CNN) -- Authorities in Kenya appeared close to ending a deadly siege early Monday at an upscale Nairobi mall, where attackers have killed at least 68 people, injured 175, and were believed to be holding about 30 people hostage.

"All efforts are underway to bring this matter to a speedy conclusion," the Kenyan military announced on Twitter.

It said that "most of the hostages have been rescued and security forces have taken control of most parts of the building."

Earlier, police had tweeted that a "MAJOR assault" by security forces was ongoing.

The developments come two days after Al-Shabaab militants first stormed the shopping center, spraying bullets and unleashing chaos.

There are believed to be between 10-15 gunmen involved in the attack, according to Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Sources within Al-Shabaab told CNN that nine names listed on a Twitter site -- now suspended -- were people who were among the alleged hostage-takers.

Three of the alleged attackers are from the United States, two are from Somalia and there is one each from Canada, Finland, Kenya and the United Kingdom, according to the list...............

Where? Somalia? We tried that before and I can't imagine any government wanting us to go there again. It didn't turn out well for us or the Americans in the court of public opinion despite the reality on the ground.

More from the National Post:
Canada offered its “full support” for the investigation into a deadly terrorist attack at a Nairobi shopping mall Sunday after an Ontario man was identified as one of the gunmen responsible.

The involvement of a Canadian has not been confirmed, but a “24 y.o. from Ontario Canada” is included on what appears to be a list of the gunmen that was posted on a Twitter feed that purports to belong to the Al-Shabab press office.

The Twitter account was suspended shortly after the list of names of the “mujahedin” were posted on Sunday afternoon.

The SITE Intelligence Group, which monitors terrorist propaganda on the Internet, said the Twitter user that posted the names was not a confirmed Al-Shabab spokesman. SITE also said it was “very unusual” for jihadists to identify fighters before they had died ....

Bad guys' Twitter account keeps disappearing, but this UNCONFIRMED list is from a forum sharing news about Somalia (post scan attached), citing yet another Somalia news site (whose post seems to have disappeared):
ahmed mohamed isse 22 y.o native, from saint paul minnesota,
abdifatah osman keenadiid. 24 y.o from minneapolis
gen mustafe noorudiin. 27 y.o from kansas city. MO
qasim said mussa 22 y.o garissa KE.

Some times the court of public opinion needs to be ignored. Much like Maggie Thatcher did in 1982.

One more, speculative name:

............Security sources said there were at least 10 attackers, including one woman, but there could have been as many as 15. One eyewitness, a 16-year-old Kenyan girl who escaped on Saturday, said the female militant might have been "mzungu", the Swahili for white person.

The possibility of a white attacker has fuelled speculation that a British terror suspect, Samantha Lewthwaite, nicknamed the "White Widow", could be involved in the plot. She was married to 7 July bomber Jermaine Lindsay, and was last year named on a Kenyan police wanted list over alleged links to a suspected terrorist cell.

Sunday began with a barrage of gunfire at 7am local time as Kenyan soldiers attempted to storm their way into the ground floor entrance to the mall's largest shop, the Nakumatt supermarket.    ..............

If Samatha was involved this wouldn't come as a surprise.  She's very bad news and a girl gone so very wrong.  If she was with this pack I hope she's taken out with them as well as she needs to be stopped.  At the very least I'd wager she was involved in the planning of it somehow.

The Kenyan army has an amazing variety of rifles.  I have seen, AK47s, AKMs, M4s, M16s, FN FAL, FN C, G3, and even a #5 Jungle Carbine.  Must make for an interesting Ammo DP during the fight for the mall.

That's probably where they get their ammo from anyways.

One nuggert of good news as an apparently off duty soldier rescues some of the victims while the assault was underway. Other details as well from the on line edition of the Daily Mail:

An off-duty member of the SAS emerged as a hero of the Nairobi siege yesterday, after he was credited with saving up to 100 lives.
The soldier was having coffee at the Westgate mall when it was attacked by Islamists on Saturday.
With a gun tucked into his waistband, he was pictured helping two women from the complex.

Our saviour: The soldier, whose gun is circled, helps two women to safety. His identity has been protected for security reasons
He is said to have returned to the building on a dozen occasions, despite intense gunfire.
A friend in Nairobi said: ‘What he did was so heroic. He was having coffee with friends when it happened.
‘He went back in 12 times and saved 100 people. Imagine going back in when you knew what was going on inside.’
Sources said the soldier was with the Special Air Service, or SAS. He cannot be named for security reasons.

The British Special Forces regularly train and operate out of Kenya, and have been involved in tracking UK citizens involved with hardline Islamists in Somalia and Yemen.

Former members work with both the UK and Kenyan governments and security firms across East Africa.
Late last night it remained unclear how many gunmen and hostages remained inside, hours after a series of loud explosions and gunfire reverberated through part of the complex, and plumes of black smoke began billowing from the roof.

Ominous: A picture purportedly showing gunmen entering the mall

People run for cover after hearing gunshots near the Westgate shopping mall, as the three-day siege drew to an end
One report said it had been caused by terrorists setting mattresses alight in a supermarket to create a distraction, but security officials said the explosions heard at lunchtime were Kenyan forces blasting their way in.
‘They can hide but they can’t run... all ways out are sealed,’ one official said.

The massacre began on Saturday shortly before midday local time.

Witnesses told how terrorists with faces hidden by Islamic scarves stormed the building, tossing grenades and spraying shoppers with AK-47s.

Yesterday pictures emerged online that appeared to show the moment gunmen entered the shopping centre, pointing their weapons at terrified civilians.

The killers, who were dressed in Western clothes, ordered all Muslims to leave, before carrying out rudimentary tests to see if hostages could recite the Koran and name the mother of the Prophet Mohammed.

One security officer said the mall had been turned into ‘an abattoir’ within half an hour, as gunmen went on the rampage.

Militants have reportedly burned their victims’ faces and removed their hands in an attempt to conceal their identities; the bodies were piled against the main door to slow the progress of rescue teams.

Yesterday reports emerged online that an injured woman trapped inside had been sexually abused at gunpoint in front of young hostages.

Volunteers run for cover after hearing a volley of gunshots at the scene of the siege
It is believed that she has been shot in the shoulder, while her child has been killed.
Details of the incident were posted hundreds of times on Facebook.

The woman is said to have been able to speak several times with her husband, who is outside the shopping centre – but last night he had heard nothing from her for several hours.

Another witness, Kamille Kaur, was with several dozen children for a cookery competition on the mall’s second floor when the attack began.
Her son, 12, and daughter, 8, were injured as gunmen opened fire. She said adults ‘were like animals, climbing over the children to get out’.

A Twitter account representing Al Shabaab, the group claiming responsibility for the attack, said it was carried out by terrorists from seven nations, including Britain, the US and Canada.

The group has recently split into two factions following bloody infighting.

Those not involved in the Nairobi attack are said to be spreading false information, raising questions over the veracity of initial reports that Londoners Ahmed Nasir Shirdoon, 24, and Liban Adam, 23, are among the gunmen.

Kenya’s Chief of Defence Forces, General Julius Karangi, said fighters from several countries had participated in the attack, but would not specify which ones.

‘We have an idea who they are, their nationality and even the number,’ he said, adding that the militants were ‘clearly a multinational collection from all over the world’.

‘We have also have an idea that this is not a local event,’ he said. ‘We are fighting global terrorism here and we have sufficient [intelligence] to suggest that.’

At least three of the terrorists were killed, he added, after Kenyan forces moved into the five-storey complex, which was filled with some 1,200 people when it was stormed by three heavily armed groups on Saturday.

Kenyans were last night bracing themselves for further terror attacks after it was claimed dozens more militants from the organisation had bribed their way into the country.

A spokesman for Al Shabaab said all Britons in Kenya are ‘legitimate’ targets because the UK has supported the African country’s military intervention in neighbouring Somalia.

Yesterday David Cameron returned early from Balmoral, where he had been staying with the Queen, to chair an emergency Cobra meeting with Cabinet colleagues including Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, Chancellor George Osborne and Defence Secretary Philip Hammond.

I think the West can help Kenya some more to extract revenge for this. Best to use mainly African boots with some force multipliers to assist them.

A bit of the latest on what Canada may be thinking ....
The federal government will revisit its support for counter-terrorism training in East Africa and humanitarian support in Somalia following this weekend’s deadly attack in Kenya.

In recent years, Canada has been quietly helping to train police and security forces in sub-Saharan Africa where Islamist terror groups have been increasingly active.

It has also contributed $145 million in drought relief and support for refugees in East Africa and Somalia, and $10 million to deploy a Ugandan police unit to the capital Mogadishu last year after the terrorist group al-Shabab was forced from the city by African Union forces.

(....)

Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Monday that Canada “will obviously work with the authorities in Kenya and our partners around the world to do what we can to hold those who have perpetrated this responsible.”

Canada’s contributions are relatively small in terms of counter-terrorism training in the region, totalling only $1.5 million for two projects this year.

The first supports training East African police chiefs on intelligence, investigation, hostage negotiation and other counter-terrorism skills, while the other sought to increase contacts between regional officials and the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL).

Neither project was specifically focused on the threat posed by al-Shabab or on Kenya, even though officials have confirmed the Canadian government has harboured concerns about a possible terrorist attack there for some time.

Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird has indicated the government is looking to increase its activities following the attacks, saying: “I made the offer (Saturday) to my (Kenyan) counterpart that we’re prepared to do more.”

However, he has also tempered expectations by noting that while Canada is prepared to “up” its engagement in East Africa, “there were two other terror incidents in both Pakistan and in Iraq, where we’ve seen dozens more killed.” ....

Is that because African boots are better than the ones with which we are issued?

The FBI and Israelis had boots on the ground and there was a small SAS presence.

There is reports on Newsworld that they managed to get 3 living specimens in custody.

I know it's wrong, but I can't help but have a thought that it's about time the "good guys" start wiping out the families of those who commit these acts. It MAY deter some in the future.

I'm sad to say that maybe I'm letting the "bad guys" win thinking like that.
