I was speaking to a well known Sea King pilot who flew off the Bonnie. I'm still not sure what was done in Ops and what was done in the Carrier ATC Center...

However, he did confirm that very little of the positioning of the inner screen (ie the Sea Kings) was done by the helicopters themselves. Which is contrary to what some other pilots have indicated.

Any interest in doing the models for the afformentioned spaces? Maybe as a stand alone cutaway to go with our Bonnie?

The curator and I spoke about it again today. We know that the first years of the Sea Kings employment cannot be described without showing what happened in those apaces on Bonnie, but we're not sure how to do it yet.

I also need to find out what the state boards looked like, and which radar repeaters, etc, were in use.

One of the problems is that there are/were few photos taken of those spaces at the time due to security concerns (I think). I asked for photos of Bonnie including interior shots from Image Services, and they had a bare handful.

I think my best bet would be to sift through some of the personal photos from the Museum Collection to see what I could find.

Talked to John as recently as last week about it.

We don’t have space to do a full size version, and to be honest it probably would be too much. A VR experience might be appropriate, but not everybody wants to do that. A model would show the overall layout, but not necessarily what they were doing.

I’m not sure exactly because I’m still working on what TTPs they used, but probably. Would it be possible to do a single cross section of the starboard side including the island, open on the port side?

I wonder what scale it would need to be to put tiny lcds in each radar repeater and the state boards? I could then have a touchscreen that shows them all and tapping any one of them would zoom in on it.

Add to that chatter on the air control freq and the internal air circuit and would it tell the story?

Still a lot of missing research to enable that though.

I'm thinking it would have to be a lot bigger than what I've got going on right now....

Probably 1/32 scale? Maybe 1/35 to get people of the right size easily? That's just a scaling factor though.

Let me ponder - this is a couple weeks of work on the 3D side.

Doing a quick bit of math...

The smallest LCDs I know of are 1/2". If a radar console is 18" then that puts the smallest scale 1:36. Assuming the island is about 75', and the air direction room extends out in front of it on 2 deck, that means somewhere around 100', or 3' at 1:36.

I'm thinking something like this:

3' long at 1:36 (maybe go a little bit bigger scale). Put the funnels and radars (turning, of course), running lights, etc. Little LCDs for each radar and bigger ones for the stateboards. Red LED for battle lanterns.

We could put it next to the larger model.

Thoughts?

Editted: we came to the same scale together, separately 1:32 sounds good; still about 3' long.

Make it big enough and you could make the screens active in some way.

I think you may have missed my last post?

Isn't the Air Direction Room directly under the island?

I was thinking go up all the way with the island to show the actual radars as well, and cut away the whole inner side of it, and show the Bridge and Fly Co (is that what they called it) as well.

And yes, the scale will have to be chosen carfully so I can get little LCDs in the repeaters and stateboards.
