Soldier who died in Afghanistan honoured at Eastern Shore high school
Nathan Smith was one of the first Canadians to die in Afghanistan
CBC News Posted: Nov 10, 2016 9:44 AM AT Last Updated: Nov 10, 2016 9:44 AM AT Staff and students at Eastern Shore District High School in Musquodoboit Harbour held a ceremony Thursday morning to unveil a plaque dedicated to Pte. Nathan Smith.
Smith was one of the first Canadian soldiers to die in Afghanistan and is a former student at the school. He died on April 17, 2002 during a friendly fire incident. Smith was 27.
Four Canadians died in friendly fire incident
Smith was serving in Afghanistan as part of the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry. He was taking part in night patrol and fire exercises when he was hit by friendly fire. Three other Canadian soldiers were also killed and several others were wounded, according to a news release.
The plaque was donated by the Canadian Pacific Railway as part of its Afghanistan plaque program. The company makes the plaques available to families of deceased soldiers.
The unveiling of the plaque took place in conjunction with Eastern Shore District High School`s annual remembrance ceremony.
