The Presidential Alert went out on US cellphones today. Seems some people are none too pleased. Think it might be a plot by President Trump to slowly start his dictatorship? Or is it just Trump derangement syndrome? The comments in the HuffPo piece are especially precious.

 It's TDS. There's an epidemic of it.

So long as it’s reserved for cases of legitimate national emergency, e.g., the missiles are inbound, I don’t see a problem. I’m sure the fear is it will be used to propagandize... that would be overblown, I would expect and hope.

There some pretty funny memes out there of made up cell screen messages.

On the other side of the spectrum, I agree it would be a good thing to have so long as it's not abused.

Cat owners not impressed. From Slate:

Cats Really Hated the Presidential-Alert System Test

By Heather Schwedel

Oct 03, 20184:00 PM

Wednesday afternoon’s test of the new presidential-alert system seemed to go as planned, at least for its intended recipients: humans. House pets, however, were another story. The government’s push notification landed at 2:18 p.m., leading to the kind of collective social media moment of awe we haven’t seen since last summer’s eclipse. On Twitter, at least, one side effect quickly became clear: The test had thoroughly freaked out cats.

BREAKING: my cat does not care for the sound of the presidential alert system. pic.twitter.com/eJqEfl0aif

When phones around the country buzzed and EEEENP EEEENP EEEENP’d, many felines apparently responded to the interruption by leaping several feet into the air and otherwise expressing angst and fright. Though humans could perhaps find comfort in the text of the alert—“THIS IS A TEST … No action is needed,” it went—cats, who both don’t own smartphones and can’t read, were cruelly given no such relief.

DAMN YOU #PresidentialAlert FOR SCARING MY CAT!

i’m really mad about this presidential alert system for a lot of reasons but mostly bc it just terrified my cat

Well, the stupid presidential alert had its expected effect: it scared the crap out of the cats and infuriated me.

Thanks a lot Trump your “presidential” alert scared the crap out of my cat I hate you even more pic.twitter.com/RrdItIe6EU

Just got the #PresidentialAlert and all my cats jumped. Thanks for that.

    (P.S. I jumped too.)

Just had it go off & my cat Sam immediately wacked the crap outta my phone. LoL Like what is a Presidential Alert for & can I turn that off? xD https://t.co/qQDTm1ZrNo

(Not all cats had this reaction, though. Cats: Not a solid voting bloc! Either that or your cat is an alien.)

The thing about pissing off cats is that when you do it, you also tend to anger the crucial constituency of human cat owners, who tend not to like when their fur babies get scared. There is no way to opt out of the alerts, although there’s reason to believe they’re actually a good thing, but that isn’t going to make your cat feel any better. When doomsday comes, it will be bad for lots of reasons, but surely one of them will be dealing with residual cat-owner wrath.

FEMA's system is quit similar to the Alert Ready system Canada tested last May.

As with any system.
It'll be good if it works when needed.
In order to know if it works, it must be tested.
Some people will always ignore alerts.

I’ve received a couple, including an accurate tornado warning two weeks ago. There are kinks to be worked out, but it’s a good system and a valuable tool for public safety. I’ve seen a few amber alerts on it too.

You can also receive Amber Alerts through The Weather Network app. And we know that you won't see Trump traffic on that because the Russians control the weather.

Friday 0200 hrs, Presidential Alert to the nation..... "The White House is out of covfefe".......

A moment of black humour:

Can you imagine how Reagan's hot microphone moment would play out if it instead occurred on this system?

I am in full agreement with those people that want to opt out of the emergency alert system. They should be allowed to do so if they wish.

Darwin would be fascinated.

We were still testing our air raid sirens, weekly, until around the mid 70's (IIRC) along with the duck and cover drills. Plus I still get all kinds of alerts from US television. EBS, weather, etc.

Yep. But even if they do I bet they'd be the first to rant and scream if they weren't warned of a pending disaster.
"well they should have overrode me opting out of it because it was for real".
