I've done my research, but now I have some questions.

Hi everyone. First off I want to start by saying thank you to all who have served this country and/or who still are serving this country. Without you guys, there's no telling where we'd be.

I registered with this site a few months ago because I am considering the military as a possible career choice. My brother is also on the this website and he recommended it to me. I think I've posted once before, but was told to do more research before posting again, and so I did. I followed along here and went on the CDN forces website. I know about the pre-enrollment testing because my brother has gone through it. I've decided on a few trades to pick for the online profile, but I don't want to pick a V3 trade because I will probably be a V4 (my brother and I have the same eyesight and he's a V4), but maybe I'll throw one in just in case medical standards have changed; although I doubt it.

These are the trades I'd like (all army): Comms Research, Vehicle Tech, Wpns Tech (land),  and Med Tech.

I've done my research on what the trades entail, but I just have a few inquires: How often do these trades get to go out into the field and work with the combat specialists. I'm not a gun nut or anything, but I think that would be a cool experience to be like those guys, but still have a trade to take into the civilian life. And if they do, how often can they go out?

Thank you for your appreciation for what we do. There's an even better way to show it - if you manage to enroll and begin to make a career and a life of this, do your best. Don't complain, look for positives and exemplify professionalism. Also, (and I realize that you meant absolutely nothing wrong by this) but combat is not "cool experience". Nuff said there...

Most trades will pull you away from home from time to time from varying degrees of length. If it's just field you are concerned with, then it depends on your trade, unit and fitness. Support trades such as medic, V-Tech, Sigs - while employed with a Service Battalion or a first line unit such as the Royal Canadian Regiment, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry or Canadian Engineer Regiments will deploy at least 2 or 3 times a year (or even more) for 1, 2 or 3 weeks at a time.

If you happen to be posted to a hard base position (garrison) you may still go to the field (kinda like being on loan to a unit who needs your help) but more infrequently. Your experience helps, as the more experienced you are the more valuable you are. That means at the beginning, keep your mouth shut and say yes to every opportunity presented to you. This is where your fitness and health comes in. Stay fit. Keep healthy.

So, in summary, there is no solid answer. We can't just say "Oh, a Vehicle Technician will be in the field X amount of times and a Postie will be there once..." But you do have a greater chance of field time and deployments as a V Tech as opposed to, say, a Lab Tech...
