Ideas on how Girl Guides can support our troops!

Silly thought/request but I'm wondering if anyone would be able to help me out:

When I was in high school, we collected soccer balls to be sent to peacekeepers - they would give them to children abroad to build bonds with the community.

So now I'm looking for a service project (community service) for my Guide group. This idea came up. Granted, when we did this it was a few years ago, and I'm not really sure what came out of it.

Since Girl Guides is largely about co-operation, we thought we'd support our troops aboard.   I know a couple of years ago, Girl Guides in Ottawa sent cookies over to Kandahar.

Any thoughts on how to do this? Know of any projects ongoing through the MFRC's? Would the soccer ball thing still work in Afghanistan?

Thanks

Michelle

This is off on  a tangent but your local veterans association may appreciate some help with this years poppy drive.

Poppy drive is a great idea.  What about also offering to escort veterans to the Nov 11 rememberance Day ceremonies?  A lot of them have mobility issues.

To expand on the above-mentioned theme, since they are Girl Guides and not driving themselves yet, how about volunteering to escort[and push] the veterans around once they are at the ceremony's?

If we get them DLOC trained they could deploy as a sub unit...just kidding.

Seriously, be there on NOV 11 and parade, thank the soldiers and vets when you see them and when they are older, consider joining and serving our great nation  :salute:

Thanks everyone for the suggestions!
For sure we will be out there on November 11, and the days preceeding it helping with poppy sales.

And ArmyRick - they all want to know how to do drill...lol

Brendo_51 - We are thinking of adopting a CF unit/batallion/etc and sending them cookies :) Maybe itll be yours...lolo

i do not know what  girl scout troop in the States but when ilived there, they  had been sending the US army  gulf overseas in the Gulf, playboy style magazines that  the girl scouts had coloured and dressed the girls in clothes using magic marker and crayons. figured the boys could have something from home that way  and not affend the host country. it was on the news and the higher ups in the girl scouts group were very unhappy. so what  ever you do check with the army  and the head girl scout to make sure it is okay  with them first.
i hear the guys loved the personalized magazines but the HQ girl scouts did not like the idea.

Which HQ girl scouts do you mean, the ones at Girl Scout HQ or the ones at Army HQ?

Tom

How about, when doing the cookie drive, get the girls to ask the neighbours to donate another box for troops overseas?

Anyone know if its possible to "adopt" a CF unit overseas? I know the cadets were thinking of adopting the group in Sinai...

Any thoughts on who to contact?
