Hello.
I'm going to basic training in September. I gave up everything to become a soldier. Well, kinda. I'm a lock smith apprentice, but I always knew I was a soldier at heart. I'll make a good living become a lock smith just sitting around in the van, occassioanlly changing locks here and there. Who wants to go crawl in the mud and march 30k? Me. Then I have my driving test on September but I'm going to have to skip that because of basic training. ... (I paid for the driving lessons and everything, pretty expensive ...)
My application process was smooth. I dropped by the recuritment center and talked to a master corporal, I think.
Her: You want to make a career in the military?
Me: Yes.
Her: What?
Me: Infantry.
Her: Oh really.
Me: Yeah really.
Her: You sound like you know what you're doing.
Me: Yeah.
So she gave me the application paper and various other forms to bring. I do. Two days later I came back and filled out the form with another recruiting officer. Hmmm ... then two weeks I got a call for CFAT. It was kinda hard on the math and spatial section, but I passed.
The lady working there asked me when I want to do fitness test. I said, soon as possible. I did it the next day.
Then I went for medical and interview. I don't drive, I take the bus. Guessed what? The public transportation decided to have a strike the day I went for the med and interview! And it was a stealth strike too; they didn't warn about this the day before or anything. I had to pay a guy $20 to take me to the recuritment center, getting there just in time!
The captain who inteviewed me was a bit ... whats the word, not condescending, but a bit hestitate about me. I didn't do well on the interview as I liked, but thats ok, it doesn't matter ... because a month later I got the call to be sworn in.
It went something like this:
Me: Hi.
Him: Hi. Are you still interested in the army?
Me: Yeah.
Him: Ok. *ask me a bunch of questions*
Me: *answers*
Him: Ok, your training starts in September.
Me: Cool, thanks.
It was a tough, tough choice: a easy, relaxing career as a lockmith or a infantry? Do I want to drive around my city changing, installing and fixing locks or do I want to crawl in the mud and fire guns? And possibly getting shot at. Do I want to spend an easy life or a hard one? It was a very, VERY hard decision, because my mom and dad is strongly against the military and I'll probably "disappoint" and make them worry when I leave for basic (haven't told them yet ...) but, as they say, "its your life".
My philosophy in life is ... do whatever you want (as long as it doesn't harm anyone), and don't let anyone hold you back.
So thats my little story
PS: for the record, its 4 months from first visit to the call to become sworn in (which is soon ....)
