Hey folks,

A question was brought to my attention about a deceased WW II vets record of discharge in 1945. The record contains the acronym A.F.G.O. 56. Anyone have any idea what it stands for? Tried a google but no dice.

Thanks in advance.

In what context?  Uneducated guess is that it is a reference to an Armed Forces General Order,  but context is key to understanding such things...

Like here,

7. AFGO 11/36

8. AFGO 69/39

2. AFGO 38/25

In what branch of service was the individual?  Possibly RCAF?  Perhaps . . . Air Force General Order?

See here for an example of use.

While it may not be the exact "A.F.G.O. 56" that is referenced in the documents (they may have been numerically sequenced in each year like CANFORGENs e.g. 56/1944, 56/1945 . . .) here is a link to AFGO 56 in a Canada Gazette that deals with re-allocation of personnel, so it could possibly be a reference in the discharge of pers from the service.
