As my train was pulling into Winnipeg last week, I saw what looked like the
better part of a German Armoured Battalion in the Transcona Yard heading
east. I counted 46 Leopard 2‘s and numerous HETs and support vehicles. In
talking to people at the Via station I hear that this isn‘t the first train
heading back to Germany via Halifax.

This makes sense. The Germans have shut down their training facility at CFB
Shilo so they would be taking their equipment home. Too bad they didn‘t
donate it to us.

Why have they shut it down?
And what, if I may ask in my greatly ignorant way, are our remaining NATO
commitments? Language classes for central European officers are about the
only ones of which I am presently aware. Are there any others any more?
See? Yet again, I think it‘s safe to say the military suffers from a bit of
a "PR-problem" with the general public, among its many other
difficulties...

Hmm as far as i know we still have British troops in CFB Suffield and In
Waingright. As for why the shut down the training in Shilo, with the unification
of the two Germany‘s they have training areas at home now. Plus the cost of
training here.

they‘ve shut down because of the expense versus using some existing training
areas in the former E Germany.

Yes, and the loss will also be felt in the Manitoba
Hutterite colonies.
