Extended period of service after 3b release

I'm in my ninth year of service and I am facing a 3b release for a heart condition that I have developed.  My case manager mentioned that some members are being offered an extended period of service of up to three years if the member is still capable of doing his/her job and their trade could use them (must be supported by CoC naturally).  I'd like to get to the 10 year mark so I was hoping that someone here has been granted additional time at the end of a 3b release in a similar situation.

I can't comment on if you will receive an extension or not because it is possible. I do know saying I'm almost at my 10 year mark means nothing to the military in there consideration. I was released with 9 years 10 months nothing I did or said mattered for the extra 2 months. Although I already had an extension given.

I do hope you manage to make it to your 10 years.

It is entirely possible, but may be difficult depending on your rank and your branches manning levels and requirements.  Your RSM and Career Manager are the ones that know that, and even if they did have room for you, it is still up to your CO to accept risk and ensure there is gainful employment for you.

Every branch is different, but for example, in the Arty, the only rank that is relatively easy to be retained is WO because we have a lot of them, but even that is a stretch, and you would need a unique skill set and highly thought of for your knowledge base.

All other ranks don't really stand a chance.  The Gnr-Sgt level is needed for field and need to be healthy.  The MWO-CWO level are full up and retaining someone at that rank is only holding healthy solders back.

That all said, all you can do is ask, but if you don't get it, use your voc rehab time to your advantage and do your best to get your CoC to employ you to set you up for civie world.  JPSU is not a bad thing if it happens.  Use it to your advantage and don't be bitter.

Cheers!

The current correct term to use is accommodation. In my case, I was approved for the three years and I was released 3b with 20 years 3 months. Nobody here can read your CoC and CM minds. I echo Teager and GnyHwy hope you achieve what you are looking for, but with a 3b in your future, start making plans now for the eventual release.

Something that may be helpful is to find out what is required in your unit that your skill base is suited for and sell yourself for that.  Realize that can't sell yourself for your actual job, because your category now says you are not fit for it.

Without knowing your trade, rank and skillets I am just speculating, but in a field unit there are few positions that would be considered low risk for your condition.  Some jobs that come to mind are QM and Ops/Trg, but those can be very stressful in heightened times. If they aren't busy, they aren't doing their job.

If you are a specialist at a certain type of equipment or TTP, I would focus on that and explain to your CoC that you could spend your time developing a training package and assisting with that training as much as possible.

Actually, the correct term is now "being granted a period of retention". The accommodation term isn't used anymore because it implied members were being treated special. Your disclosure package would have included a para in retention, and the steps to take to request it. There are some caveats, in that the unit must gainfully employ you within unit lines (not post you to a JPSU except for the last 6 months for voc rehab), the period can be cancelled (I believe with 30 days notice) at any time by the CO or the member. Although rare, sometimes a member can be posted to a new unit for retention, but this normally is only the case when they have a rare skillset or there is a niche they can fill (going from a deployable unit to a training establishment in the same geo location).

Its funny because Iwas reading down this thread and asking myself "Why hasn"t anyone corrected the wording to POR and no one made reference to the disclosure package..." and then BAM - in walked captloadie!

So, yea what he said!

Have you even reached the disclosure stage yet? If not, I would not worry about making your 10. You will.

The OP asked and answers, based on current and retired knowledge was offered.

captloadie provided the best answer, with current information.
This does not diminish the other answers or support for the OP's concerns.

Just to close off this thread, a period of service is available for me as my trade is in the red and my unit is supporting my request to hang in there.  Sometimes things work out as they should.

Have you received your disclosure package yet?

Does the possibility exist to CT to COATS?  You can stay in uniform (till 65yrs old there) and retain the elmental/branch/regt identity, but you might end up doing something different (advising cadet corps, etc), and I think there are provisions to recieve waivers for medical/physical limitations.

And only you can judge this one within reason.......but if during your period of retention, your medical situation improves, your case could be reassessed and your 3.b. Medical can be rescinded.  Seen this happen before.

COATS is a whole nuther world......"The minimum medical standard for enrolment into COATS is V4 CV3 H3 G3 O3 A5. Though, under special circumstances, Cdn Forces Recruiting Group may waive this standard for some COATS applicants up to a V5 G4 O4"
