There are a few second had breakers on the market but DND needs to move quickly.

I'm curious if the Davie-Federal Fleet Aiviq offer is still available or being considered?

The Aiviq is a heavy icebreaker.

The three icebreakers being refurbished as interim ships by Davie are medium icebreakers, while the governement is looking for a light icebreaker as the fourth interim ship. A light icebreaker is more in line with the CCG type 1100 capabilities (while Aiviq is in the Terry Fox/St-Laurent class), there are many such vessels available out there.

But obviously, before transfer, they would have to be refitted and upgraded to CCG standard so they become top-heavy.  ;D

Also mainly for river use, apparently river icebreakers focus on longitudinal strength versus horizontal strength as there is less risk in being crushed by icepacks, but a River icebreaker spends more time ramming through ice.

Viking Supply Ships (where the current three came from) might still have some more medium icebreakers, one of which might be converted by Davie for CCG--2018 story:

Viking Supply Ships Sells Three Icebreaking AHTS

Viking Supply Ships announced Friday it has sold three icebreaking AHTS Tor Viking, Balder Viking and Vidar Viking to the monarchy of Canada as the weak offshore market continued in the first half of 2018.

Adding to its woes, Viking Supply Ships also revealed that it will report a first half-year net loss of $40 million from a $12 million loss from the sale of three PSV’s , a write down of book values on the remaining two PSV’s of $8 million and an operating loss of $20 million...

Following the sale of the three AHTS’ to Her Majesty the Queen in Right of Canada, Viking’s fleet will consist of three Ice-1A and one Ice-1A Super classed AHTS, one regular AHTS (Odin Viking) and two PSVs. Viking notes, however, that Odin Viking and the two PSVs are being actively marketed for sale...

Thanks for the info, I did not see that they were looking specifically for a light icebreaker. I'm curious what the plan is going forward after decades of no progress or even talk on CCG ships there at least seems to be the possibility of replacement ships on the horizon.

Davie is working/providing 3 medium icebreakers
Irving to supply a couple AOPS

Diefenbaker by who and when?

6 Icebreakers of what class(s) by who and when?

The rest of the major CCG ships are to be built by Seaspan?

Got a love the “monarchy of Canada” bit.
