Hi everyone,

I recently went to CFEME for a pilot medical and the ophthalmologist found a problem that disqualified me for all aircrew trades. I have seen optometrists all my life and none of them has ever brought this issue to my attention.

I went to an optometrist to get a referral to a specialist in the issue that disqualified me, but after repeatedly testing for the issue, she couldn’t find it. She did not refer me to a specialist because there’s nothing to refer me for. I’ve since had the optometrists office send over everything to CFEME as an appeal, but I have no clue what my chances are since it’s an optometrists word against an ophthalmologist. Any advice or common experiences? I thank you in advance.

I'd suggest getting a referral to an ophthalmologist from your family doc - tell them what you've been told, what condition you may/may not have, and take it from there...or see if any in your area are taking self referrals, though most of those are folks looking for LASIK/PRK. May take some time though.

Thanks, I’ll try to get that referral. This specific issue doesn’t require an RMO review, just CFEME. Is there a typical timeline for cases like this?

I really wish I could give you a straight answer but can't - depends on availability of specialists in your area, THEN getting the stuff through CFEME=>when I was in, things could take days, weeks or months depending on the issue being dealt with.

Could I PM you? I’m just uncomfortable with telling the specific details publicly.
